Bob was one of the best ever at calling races... He was funny, never took himself too seriously, and got along well with his co-workers. Bob had a great voice, talent to speak extemporaneously very well, and he captured what was happening on the track extremely well too.
Watch the race from the 1990 North Wilkesboro spring race.... The satellite feed version. It's hilarious hearing Bob talk about the camera guy on top of the building on the front stretch grandstand.
Bob asked the camera guy to dance
.. It's hilarious. Of course Benny and Ned made it even funnier too.
Then the 1993 Talladega spring race is funny too. Watch the satellite feed of that race too... Before the commercial break Bob gets what the track fact feature was all about all wrong and backwards. Benny tries to correct Bob and Bob tells Benny he's not listening again... Right before they go to commercial and the background music starts playing Benny says, " you big liar". Ned Jarrett laughs. As soon as they are on commercial break Bob asks the producer in the truck if what Benny said made it on live air.... The answer was yes and Bob said, " that's great. That just topped it off." And Bob and Benny and Ned all laugh.
Then there's quiet for a bit and Benny says, " Ned I wouldn't get out of the electric chair for that back rub". That goes back to before an earlier commercial break and the camera guys found some not so attractive ladies with a big sign telling Benny he could come and sit in their recliner and get a back rub. That's funny too.
The satellite feed race from Watkins Glen when JD Mc Duffie died is hard yet great too. After Nascar acknowledged JD passing away from that wreck Benny gives a great message to his JDs wife and family and to all the fans watching the race. The next commercial starts and Bob tells Benny, " Benny that was strong especially what you have been through the last several weeks". And Ned Jarrett says, "That's right. Nobody could have done it better". That race you get to hear the real friendship those three men had.
And who can forget Bob's high pitched and yet great call of Ricky Rudd and Dale Earnhardt spinning in turn 1 at North Wilkesboro in 1989.... On the last lap of that race.
Bob Jenkins was one of the best race announcers ever to have done the job. Bob, Barney Hall, Ken Squier, Eli Gold, Buddy Baker, Mike Joy, Neil Bonnett are all times greats in calling Nascar races.
