Checked the valve clearances today at about 36k miles on the clock and this is what it looks like under valve cover. I have no idea what previous owner has fed to this but I have now done two short OCIs with Havoline DS 20W-50. Camshafts look sludged but that is just coarse surface.

All my bikes stay this clean. Amazing, wish my cast iron V8 would. Have you ever seen a motorcycle motor that sledged?

Not a failure. Time just marches on. K1100LT was superseded by K1200LT in 1999, and then by K1600GT in 2011.

Looks just like the valve train in my old 1985 K100. I put some miles on that engine. Aside from the classic "drive hub" problems on those bikes..a very reliable machine..almost boring to service the engine as I never had any issues.

36k is nothing to really be shocked over for being a clean engine but for a bike thats 21yrs old thats quite pretty. Id love to see what my 20yr old Ninja's top end looks like.

I'm going adjust the valves on my 34 yr old KZ1000, I will post the pics. You have never adjusted the valves on your 20yr old Ninja ? BMW looks good.

My 1986 K75C is getting close to 150,000 miles and looks just as clean under the cam cover. 4qt sump on a 750cc water cooled motor makes for easy oil'n!
