Sad... If not bizarre as it gets! I've worked in law enforcement & ballistics for 40 years. I have a hard time believing this.

Given that at normal sporting targets, the angle of inclination of the barrel to the horizontal is pretty small, so extreme ranges aren't common.

Wasn't the 45-70 tested to over 3,000 yards in volley fire, and that's not even close to 42-45 degrees inclination.

apparently the guy shot into the air to clear a round inside.

Im not familiar, but there REALLY is no other way to clear a round?!?

Wowser....did the bullet strike her in the top of the head on the way down(??) Bullets in ballistic flight can go pretty far.

Clearing a muzzle loader, I'm not familiar. It would be a hassle, but shoot it into soft earth, not the air.

That's a poorly crafted news story. Where is the round that hit her - was it a through and through or did the bullet lodge in her body? What's the angle of the entry wound? A high angle would point to a ballistic trajectory, which certainly would be possible if someone 2 miles away fired their rifle "into the air".

If it was a muzzleloader he could have cleared it using a ball discharger. The discharger used a small C02 canister which blows the powder and projectile out of the barrel. Firing into the air is nothing short of utter stupidity! If U must shoot, direct it into the ground, dirt bank, large old tree, something for pete's sake. Guy should be held accountable.

An old friend of mine was working in his garage some years ago during deer season. A shotgun slug (bullet) came through the wall, hit a 2 x 4 stud on the opposite wall and fell to the floor.

His wife said his face was pale and white when he walked into the house to explain what happened.

Could't agree more. You have to be a special kind of irresponsible moron to fire a live round into the air. Throw the book at him.

Not going to happen with the Amish, they do not sue.

It was an "accident" even if it was one of negligence, the Amish will not press charges, nor sue. They truly do remain separate from the "English" world, considering how things are they are probably right in the long run.

Unless it truly is benificial to them as in unemployment benifits or paid holidays. They just have no use for our judicial system and even attempt to take care of their own law breakers themselves.
