Who here has a job in the oil and gas industry?

I have been looking for a career change over the last year or so, and I have been thinking about what I may like to do. BITOG had certainly ignited my interest in the oil and gas industry, so when a professional position came up at one of the major oil and gas companies that I knew I could do well, I thought, what the [censored], I will apply for it! Well long story short I have a new position specialising in fuels and lubricants, and I can't wait to start. Part of my role is effectively BITOG for a job, giving advice on products for different applications.

Good for you!

Does dispensing bulk 5w30 into beater Toyotas count?

Id rather not say on a public forum for now. It would probably be ok but I know some corporations have rules around social media etc.

That is awesome!!! No, no, I'm not envious or anything

are you a chemist or chemical engineer? If not, you would probably fit as a salesman, but they are a dime a dozen. Good ones are harder to find, but margins arent the greatest, so not sure it helps. Lots of jobbers are long standing family businesses.

Good luck in your job, which I assume is more like a "tech line" job looking up what the spec lubes are for certain applications, and doing cross references... What is the prospect from here, sales, or something else? Good luck standing out from the pack and moving ahead, giving great service to your customers!

So you'll be responding to all those web queries where people ask "how much group IV is there in your product X?" or "Can I run 5w30 grade when my car calls for 5w-20"?

Seriously though, congrats on a new job!

Congrats! Sounds like fun.

I worked in reclamation in Oil and Gas for a number of years out West when I was younger.

It was fun, but I lost a girlfriend of 8 years and ended up moving back East to be with family.

Was totally worth it, aside from the fact that it ended badly for me.

I would have stayed out West and continued doing it, but I was all alone out there and it got to me.

Congratulations and you'll love it for sure!

I'm in O&G as a project manager on the environmental side. I assume you are going into either drilling or production? I'd be curious to know which company you are going to work for. Congrats on the new gig!
