Beware! ****'s Sporting Goods gift cards

To answer questions: cards were purchased at the counter in the store.

Whoever said "don't want to shop" doesn't have teenagers in the house, whose wants change before I will finish typing this LOL

Agree that there is no proof we didn't use it, and that they probably get plenty of fraudsters and we are lost in the noise.

Bummer to have the gift cards get scammed. I had the same thing happen on a VISA card i earned as a rebate from a promotion. I lost $75 to a scam that drained the card of value at a Walgreens in LA. Needless to say, I had not been in LA, and the card issuer basically said tough luck.

Best advice: Spend the card quickly.

And to all the folks recommending Cabelas/Bass Pro, I'll remember that the next time I need Volleyball/Soccer/workout gear/fitness stuff for myself or the kids... I'm sure they'll have what I need ha, ha. ****'s is basically last on the list for outdoors gear, but they carry a lot of basic sporting goods stuff that is not outdoors oriented. Face it: they made a business decision, and the reality for them is they make more money selling other stuff than what they decided to stop carrying. Pretty simple... Businesses do it all the time and we don't get bent out of shape over it unless it involves our political ox to gore...

Actually Cabelas does have a lot of that stuff, but maybe not as much as ****'s. ***** made a political decision, not a business decision with their gun stance.

****'s Sales Down

Well now that you mention it, Cheesecake Factory has two free slices of cheesecake today with a $25 gift card purchase online. Today only!

Shop for real volleyball gear - kneepads, Volley lites, good nets, etc... Not at Cabelas.

Shop for Soccer gear - cleats, shorts, shin guards, balls, etc... Not at Cabelas.

How about golf? How is Cabela's there?

Plenty of other sports with the same story. Have kids playing team sports? We don't shop Cablea's for that gear...

Cabela's is good at the areas they retail in. There are a lot of areas they do not, such as team and individual sports sporting goods. ***** does a good job there. Same story on fitness. They happen to carry some outdoor gear, but that is long way from being specialists in it.

As an avid fisherman and hunter, along with kids and myself in sports, they both have their niche. To say one can replace the other is funny...

The basic point remains was the business they gave up was low margin relative to other goods they sell. While the impetus may be politcal, the reality is its an easy decision when the margins are low on the product in question.

My wife totally fell for that brainwashing. I argue with her all the time about it.

People are easy to fool. My sisters thought process is regurgitating what the TV tells her what to think.

Well that sucks. IDK who investigates gift card fraud, might be the Secret Service.

If ****'s didn't adequately randomize the numbers, there might eventually be a class action lawsuit or other settlement to help you out.

But how hard and fruitlessly are you going to waste your time pursuing this? Odds are slim you'd win.

My thinking is that this is a huge industry run by the usual suspects. We see similar schemes in cellphone numbers and sims.

So it's not a ***** problem exclusively.

Also, I would get a gift card directly from a vendor instead of going through a consolidator online.

Personally I don't use gift cards or give them out except for a few occasions when I purchased them from a particular restaurant as a gift.

Cash is king. When my grandsons don't have a specific gift request, I always offer a gift card or cash. They always pick cash.

It's too bad people can't focus on the topic at hand that the OP posted about....

This. Gift cards are pretty dumb when you think about it.

Right! No more gift cards.

Unfortunately that seems to be happening a lot more and the company doesn't really care since it's one less card on their books as a liability. About the most one can do to prevent this is to only buy cards that are behind the counter and controlled, ie, not hanging on a Gift Card Mall display at the store.
