I have these 2 fast Fords and I was just curious if there is a consensus on oils for modulars here. I have been using Mobil 1 5W-30 since 1500 miles in both of them. Neither engine has any oil consumption issues or other problems.

Application #1. 00 SVT F-150, 20,000 miles, Supercharged 5.4L V-8, 400HP, 470ft/lbs. torque.

Application #2. 01 Mustang GT, 25,000 miles, 4.6L V-8, 300HP, 320 ft/lbs. torque.

I have run Amsoil ASL 5w-30, GC, and will soon be running Mobil1 0w-30 & 0w-40 (not at the same time) in my 4.6L.

I have had decent results with all of the above oils. Motorcraft oil has also shown some great UOA's on the modular engines. Even the dreaded 5w-20 has shown great results in these engines. From what I have seen, the Ford modular V8 isn't very picky about the oil that goes into it. The filter seems to be another story.

I'd agree with medic. My UOA results have shown little difference beween a 5w20, a 5w30, and a 5w40.

I'm not thrilled with my fuel mileage loss running a 5w40 though (around 7% on my F150).

Nothing wrong with the M1 5w30 in this application!

Filter wise, go Motorcraft FL-820s or other high quality filter - my choice is Wix and clones.

Thank for the replies. I am very comfortable with M1 oils and will stick with them, I may even switch to the EP version on the next change. Right now they both have the SL SS M1 5W-30 in them and it will be awhile before they need oil changes. As far as other oils medic mentioned, I don't buy Amsoil or Castrol products, so those are out. My question should have been "Best non-Castrol, off the shelf, synthetic oil for H.O. Ford modular V-8's? BTW, I've always used the Motorcraft FL-820S filters, but since Wal-Mart no longer carries them I may switch to something else like NAPA gold.

Ford recommends a different viscosity for the Cobra, which uses a modular supercharged engine. You might do a search on that.

I plan to send in a used sample of SM M1 5W30 from our 5.4L Expedition next week for a UOA. It might give you a point of reference to compare with your 5.4L. Ours is not the performance engine like yours....but similar. From the other UOAs it seems that these engines (and the 4.6L) run well with almost anything. MC 5W20 and 5W30 are popular with good results.
