Hey guys,

A buddy of mine recently aquired a kart and found that a rebuild was in order. Has a big bore kit (170cc)on order with all the other stuff. The piston was fried.

My question to you small engine guru's is this:

1-Should there be a break-in?
2-If a break in is needed, what oil is best?
3-What oil would you use for this heat?

Not REALLY looking for oil brand as much as oil weights.

Thanks again guys.

I had a gy6 powered scooter, i always used amsoil 4 stroke air cooled scooter oil for 3k intervals and worked very well. I replaced valve cover gasket at around 14k and was surprised to see no sludge it was just golden and clean

Love the GY6's! Even the knock-off versions are very good. They're fan cooled, so they tend to last a long time if cared for. I too would choose heavy-duty engine oils over any passenger car oil. 15w40 would be ideal IMO. They don't have a filter, but I've seen some GY6's with screens that you can remove/clean. For this reason, I'd do an early oil change or two.
