Three of my very favorites:

The Man Who Would Be King : About as perfectly made as any movie has *ever* been made. Connery & Caine are dead on as Danny & Peachy. I'll bet Rudyard Kipling himself would have loved it.

Excalibur : Told from Merlin's viewpoint, it's the best King Arthur movie ever made, period. Nothing else is even in the same league. A young gorgeous Helen Mirren is an added attraction as Morgana.

Rio Bravo : A great western on a small scale. John Wayne, Dean Martin, Angie Dickinson, Ricky Nelson & Walter Brennan make a great cast. Remade ~10 years later with Robert Mitchum & James Caan as Eldorado , I find the first one much better.

Quote:

District 9
Good Will Hunting
Groundhog Day

I loved these too.

Surprisingly I don't think anyone's mentioned Eternal Sunshine of the Blissful Mind yet. Loved those classic new england and boston shoots and the whole story.

Big Lebowski also goes to the top of the list.

12 Monkeys. (one of the few time travel movies i liked)

Lots of honorable mentions. LOTR, Secret of kells, the fall, one day, the graduate, ferris buehler, clerks, angels and insects, fried green tomatoes, i luv hukabees, american beauty, ghost world, donnie darko, dr strangelove, avatar, matrix, hairy potthed, star wars,

and with halloween coming around i recommend either stir of echos or the others.

Best movie EVER? That's a tough one. Everybody has the genre they favor....which contributes to a highly subjective list of favorites.
I may as well add a few of my favorite 'best' films.....
No order here:

The Godfather (1 and 2)
Young Frankenstein
North by Northwest
Raging Bull
Schindler's List
Rear Window
The Night of the Hunter (awesome filming and great story/acting)
