Subject is a 2000 Dodge Dakota that has a very whiny differential (8.25 chrysler), makes some noise under acceleration, more under coasting..

Can't be looked at until after tax refund next year, what's the best stuff (weight/brand) I could put in there to tone it down until then?

thanks

thanks, I did see a valvoline 85/140, would that be even better or ? There's no RL within probably 200 miles of me.

In BMW circles, redline is known to do well for quieting down diffs. Now in mine, it did not help, at least not enough to satisfy me, so I got a rebuild...

Good luck,

JMH

Use a thick oil, for sure, until you get it fixed.
Or, get one of the new synthetic fluids with sawdust premixed in it.

sawdust?

Get Schaeffer's 267 from one of the Schaeffer vendors here. It contains powdered moly plus other very high quality ingredients. It'll keep your sick differential running as long as possible.

I have not personally seen sawdust used, but I have seen cigarette tobacco used. Same principle, cellulose suspension. It really isn't very different than the clutch wear material that accumulates in automatic transmissions during normal use.

If it's a bearing, forget about nursing with fluid choice. The bearing will go sooner rather than later - regardless.

If the noise is general diff noise - yes thicker is better.
