In response to the thread on highway idiocy:

One of my "best practices" is to avoid driving side by side with another car or truck (especially), either to the left or on the right...so when passing I wait until the coast is totally clear such that I can pass the truck without delay....
I once saw a Saturn "sucked" into the draft of a semi and bounced off the truck's side and rickochet off the highway into a lake!

What are your "best practices" on the road....?

I've driven next to tractor trailer rigs in cars that weigh far less than any Saturn (1976 Civic) was never "sucked" into any truck.
The moral of the story is that the best practice in driving is to pay attention.

Keep a mental map of the cars around you...
This helps if you are changing lanes, or similar,
and can't find them in a mirror...

Exactly, but a constantly updated map.

Always know what is going on around you, and don't be in a hurry- I always get a kick out of people weaving in and out of freeway traffic, then end up right behind them at the exit.

1. Situational awareness
2. Always assume that other drivers will make the most unexpected/moronic moves possible. Every time.
3. Look at least six seconds ahead of you.

On the highway, i try to keep a good look way ahead say at least 1/2 mile. If i see more than one car that far ahead with brake lights activated, i let off the gas.

Yakking on the cell phone.
Thinks she's on the road alone.
Makes the other drivers moan.
Yes, I think her mind is blown.

I see this all the time, they're usually the ones getting on the freeway the slowest. I always say "Put that S in Corolla S to use and show me what it can do"
