Don't bring the subject up, they will look at you like you could be patient zero and going to infect THEM.

The good news is that most people don't have bedbugs, and with education, never will have. They may come out with a good way to eradicate them one of these days, but in the meantime, take no chances.

Careful about buying used stuff. People that get infected homes will sell infected stuff without telling anyone it's infected, so I've heard, just to recoup losses before they buy brand new things and move back to a non infected home.. Might seem like a good deal, until you realize there's bugs in it.
