Went out for a 3day 2night, out and back trip to Hamilton Lakes in Sequoia National Park at the end of June. Finally have some free time to post pics.

The trail started with nice forest hiking, but uneventful for the first 11 miles. After that it opens up to great views of the high country and you start to gain elevation.

This bridge spanned an awesome gorge.

the old bridge, apparently wiped out by an avalanche

Was out of water for a couple miles and got to fill up at this lovely spot:

After a full 17 mile day, I changed and took a dip in the lake to wash the trail off.
The rangers warned me about the 'aggressive deer' at Hamilton Lakes. The animals are sodium deficient and love to steal clothes. Luckily it was my boxers, as I could do without those vs my socks. It wouldn't drop them when I gave chase, so I picked up the camera.

Hamilton Dome. Our basin stayed dry from the threatening weather, but we got to listen.

Another critter (marmot) looking for salt

Angel Wings - has same hard rock climbing on it. Beautiful formation, ~1800' tall

Trail-gineering. An old bridge was routinely taken out by rock fall and avalanche, so they blasted through the mountain instead. The area here and nearby is know as Valhalla along the High Sierra Trail.

Precipice Lake. Photographed by Ansel Adams in 1932 also.

View from atop Eagle Scout Peak. If you look hard you can see the trail switchbacking up. Long day-hike to tag that from the lake.

It was the hottest weather of the year, so I woke up at 5am to hit the trail home and beat the heat and make good time. Sunrise about an hour down the hill looking back.

~46 miles in ~52 hours. A bit much as I had a good 5 blisters by the end. By the last 1/3 of each day, I thought "this can't end soon enough". I survived, but would prefer shorter days next time!

Photos with my Oly E-PL1 & kit lens. Which I'm currently selling, actually. Going simpler/smaller (maybe LX7?).

Awesome pics!

Does the park put out salt licks for the animals? I can understand them not wanting to mess with nature, but it seems like a cheap/easy way to make sure the animals get enough sodium. Having deer run off with clothing can't be any better for the situation than throwing out a few salt licks.

Great use of the E-PL1. Heck, you ought to keep it and add a Panasonic 20mm for low light, and an Olympus 9-18mm for some wide angle work.

That mileage would be a bit high for me in that kind of terrain. I like to take a little more time along the way. Sounds like you had a fun trip!

Thanks for the pics. They brought back some good memories. I spent a lot of time in the Sierras as a kid, mostly in the Sierra National Forrest, and some in Kings Canyon, Yosemite, and Sequoia National Parks.

Incredible pics, I am about to post some of mine from the hike I did this week

BTW, how in the world did you hike so far so fast? My feet are still sore from around 22 miles in 2 days lol

Nice. I miss backpacking. Been a long time since I've done that. Very rocky terrain. Is that pic with the lake (11th from top) taken this year? It almost looks like fall colors.

Yeah, just the morning sun angle and the vegetation.

Camera musings: I love Oly colors and used to love using my e520 + 12-60mm - that lens was simply amazing and great focal lengths for hiking. Sold that plus a bunch of other 4/3 stuff when I just wasn't using them enough (and wanted to sell before they lost too much value). Picked up the E-PL1 + 14-42 to see if I'd switch to u4/3. Still don't use it enough to justify a multiple lens system. I really love a 24mm equiv. wide angle, or else I might go for an RX100. An LX7 will give me that and be jacket-pocketable. Need to look into it more, though. I might miss the blue Oly skies when I'm taking hiking pics. Still can't seem to find that perfect camera yet, even though they have made lots of advances in mirrorless and larger sensored pocketable (s90, LX5, etc). The camera that ticks all my wants still doesn't exist.

thanks - generated a few blisters and put in 6 to 9 hour hiking days (coming down vs going up). There's plenty of crazy fast-hikers that do lots more.
