Provide the word with a brief explanation: Q1: The temperature measured in contact with an engine block was due primarily to thermal energy transfer by ----------. Q2: The major source of engine cooling is via __________ cooling. This question is open to all, but let's please allow non-engineers, non-Tribologists and non-chemists time to research the question and to respond before answering.

Let me try again with a brief explanation: 1. Conduction. Heat is moving through the metal from the interior of the engine where it's generated to the outside. 2. Convection. Heat is moved via liquid fluid from the hot part to the radiator where it's cooled.

Conduction - Heat conduction takes place between two objects in contact with each other. Radiation - The emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or through a material medium.

Thanks to all who responded with a topical answer and here's hoping you had a wonderful Christmas and will have an even greater New Year! The three avenues of thermal energy (heat) transfer are: 1) Conduction - transfer of thermal energy by solid bodies in contact with each other in which thermal energy flows from the hotter to the cooler body, 2) Convection - thermal energy transfer by the FLOW of gasses and liquids, 3) Radiation - transfer of thermal energy by photons, mainly by Infra-Red (IR) photons. Q1: The temperature measured in contact with an engine block was due primarily to thermal energy transfer by Conduction. Q2: The major source of engine cooling is via Convection cooling. Engine Heat Transfer Modeling and Simulation Radiation does enter the picture but it's contribution to cooling in minimal, and has been studied in terms of diesel engine soot particulates. MIT A bbit More Technical (MIT A bit more Technical) Leo99 gave the first correct answer so Leo99 gets the virtual BITOG Mug with the thumbsup emblem and a virtual case of XWXX full synthetic oil.
