Autozones Insane Prices....

In Chicago, Walmart is banking on the fact that the recession has worn down some leaders in the low-income community who see a national chain store as their pathway out of poverty.

I'd say it's a pathway to managed and orderly poverty.

That all said, all auto-parts stores are increasingly getting to be poor places to buy oil compared to whatever Wally's has.

If AutoZone is high on oil dont buy it... Why [censored] and complain if they dont sell any they will lower the price. Obviously the market will bear their "high Prices". Truth is you are looking for deals and the prices on everyday oil is about the same everywhere. yes you can get a deal at walmart at times but other brands are higher. Maybe the OP should start his own business and sell oil at cost and see how long he can turn a profit.

Fluids and filters were the backbone of most auto parts core business. At least the "consumer" based parts stores. Service/trade oriented ..not so much. The concept was if you came in for your routine needs that you would not go elsewhere for other needs.

This appears to have changed. Oil is no longer the loss (defined as lower than normal ROI) leader.

For example, it would be somewhere around a 25% ROI for my local AA to buy their MC oils from Wally's. Obviously, they can get it cheaper than Wally's sells it retail. Hence, they're making more than a 25% ROI on MC products.

A Zone opened up in the centah about 6 months ago. It is being managed by a young lady in her late 20s who gives me hope for my young uns' generation. It is a lot closer than WalMt. They had the brake parts I needed in stock for an 88 Grand Wagoneer. The hard ware kit I bought another mile up the street for a buck less than what AZ listed them for but didnt stock. I just buy the cheapest oil for what my cars spec and an STP filter. My car is 22 yr old BMW 528e. Presntly, it gets driven less than 10k miles a yr. I use 10 qts a yr, Convenience and savings in gas keeps me local.

What do some of thses low paid Walmart employees expect to make working retail ?

All retail jobs are low paying unless you are a manager.

A living wage, perhaps?

You dont even get 40 hrs a week. That way they don't have to give you any benefits. So you take another part time job ,also without bennies.

I can remember napa commercials during 1990's races where napa brand oil was on sale for 89 cents a quart after the rebate. Oh the memories....

A living wage would be one that affords (at any legal standard) housing, food, and clothing on a perpetual basis ... indexed for the cost of living in the area in which it is paid. If not, then you have to include transportation into the equation.

Anything that requires alternative income to reach those thresholds is not a living wage but a supplemental wage to another earner under the same roof.

Now I'll even throw out the 40 hour part of it. While we've been more or less conditioned to this being normal, I grabbed a good bit of overtime in my life for the benefits that I perceived ..and I can just as easily see those benefits being able to make my rent or put food on the table ..buy clothes, and pay for public transportation or a car.

AZ's has "insane" prices because you/we/I are comparing posted prices to that of AAP, NAPA, CarQuest, rockauto, autoanything, etc.

It's like how once in a blue moon I'll wander into Target, I don't know, just to look around, and see if anything catches my eye; their stores seem to be cleaner, quieter, and the items they sell a bit "higher quality" than other big box retailers (at least in my area).

And of course, I find myself comparing prices of my "typical" stuff that I buy on a daily/weekly/monthly basis....you know.

Target is definitely more relaxed than say Wal-Mart, where there's yelling customers, screaming kids, and snobby kids running all over the place (back when I was a kid, that's what MALLS were for.... lol).

But unfortunately, Target doesn't have much for automotive stuff....they got decents accessories and odds and ends, but no oil, filters, tools, etc. stuff like that.
