Myself, I don't carry as much as I used to. When I had the old LTD, I used to carry plenty of stuff since each road trip was almost a guaranteed breakdown of some sort.

Now, it's hard for me to not carry litres of oil, having had so many burners in the past. I don't miss that.

lol.
In reality I have:
Jumper cables.
Breaker bar w/ 13/16 socket
Aluminium floor jack
Schaeffer's box with..
>Orange reflective safety vest
>Quart of oil
>Quart of ATF
>Fuses
>Bulbs
>Paper towels
>Meal Ready to Eat
Full size spare
and if Im going on a trip, I throw the donut in as well..

I usually have some paper towels in the truck to check the oil, though I usually just check it at home. If I'm on a trip or something I might check it at a gas station. The truck does burn/leak a little motor oil since it's a Vulcan, but I just keep an extra quart at home. It gets checked often enough I'm not worried about running low while on the road.

I'm young, but I do remember the days when just about everyone carried a quart of oil in the car. My parents stopped doing that in the late 90s when all of their leakers/burners had been traded off.

My LTD kit was similar, with a little more oil and ATF and no MRE. Paper towels were replaced with rags, plus I had a whack of sockets and wrenches. I also carried a roll of very stiff copper telephone wire - the old kind. Don't ask how that came in handy.

I have a [censored] load of rags in my passenger floorboard. Ill forget I have them and walk out of work with them stuffed in my pocket(s). So they end up tossed down there, lol.
Well, when Im going on a trip I also throw in my cheap stanley tool kit.
In the picture I actually have my whole tool chest. Its on the driver side. Along with all three of my torque wrenches, two rifles, can of ammo, monitor and some other junk Ive forgotten about. Thats in no way normal though.

In the car I only carry a spare, a jack and a lug wrench.

I don't have a place to store my tools , etc, so they stay in the Jeep but ...

Sockets (small all the way up to 36mm impact socket)
Breaker bars and pipes
Extra fluids (god forbid a rollover on a trail ... gotta fill it back up) - Motoroil, trans fluid, diff oil, coolant.
Spare front axle shafts (in case a u joint blows)
Front and rear drive shafts (always seeing these get broken on rocks)

Those are the big ticket things ... always a lot of smaller stuff.

Leather wipes, I have two small kids.

Also a tow strap used many times. Nice folks with 4wd's see me off road (twice) standing with strap in hand and have stopped pulled me out. An old deactivated flip cell phone/GPS but 911 works. Cell battery full charge but removed.
