Can anyone comment on the merits of 502 and 504 for this engine? It's direct injected and some google searching shows that there are some long-term carbon build-up issues. The OCI with a 502 oil is 10k. Is there any reason to not use a 504 oil and cut the interval?

The 504 is a better oil and there is no longer any reason not to use it, the US now requires low sulfur fuel. The VW dealer here no longer uses 502, 504 in everything except the old air cooled engines.

It looks like sulfur is disapearing from U.S. fuel. There may be still a few "spot exceptions" granted by the EPA here and there this year. ......... We see GM using dexos2 oil in some gasoline engines here now, for example.
Lubrizol shows 504 being tougher, higher performance, compared to 502.

That's true about 502 , but take Castrol 0w40 it has MB 229.3 , 229.5 , Porsche a40 , BMW 01 , VW 502 .

VW502.00 is not stringent specification at all.
Make sure oil meets MB229.5 in addition to VW 502.00.

Do you think 504 oil is good for the E10 fuel?

Other than Castrol Syntec 5w40/Castrol Edge 5w40 (VW 502.00/MB 229.3), what other VW 502.00 oil isn't also MB 229.5?

Do not know. Did not stumble on any. Probably there are some, but did not see except Castrol 5W40.
