You are crazy, no need to ever drop the pan if you remove suspended transmission grime every 30K.

You are exposing yourself to leaks by dropping the pans and x-threading those ever so soft transmission case, check there may never be a filter in the VB, it may be a screen.

But your PM schedule is indeed crazy.


Well my insanity is a moot point since I just learned this Explorer does not have a removeable pan but does have a non changeable filter and has a drain plug with a shorty dipstick, so much the better. Though on the 2005 Explorer doing a very similar ATF change schedule as I outlined for 193,000 miles has not caused any stripped bolts nor leaking/weeping gaskets.

If you want to go deep into maintenance on your vehicle, check out FordTechMakuLolo on Youtube. He's a Ford tech that recently left the dealership and started his own business. He's well respected on the Ford forum I frequent. I don't know what transmission you have, but he's made a video on the 6-speed version in the F-150. He recommends more frequent oil and filter changes on my truck and goes into they "why" details. Sounds like your transmission is different enough that it may not be applicable, but you never know.

Not sure how much has changed since 2014, but that is the year X that we got for my wife this past fall. ATF is super easy! Little npt style drain plug on the bottom of the pan, drains majority of fluid. Dipstick/fill is located directly beneath the air filter box.

The PTU is a litle different matter. Looks like the police packages and the Ecoboost models typically have a rather accessible drain plug but you have to run a new, longer breather hose and do a slow and carefully measured fill through the vent that way. Other models without the factory drain plug can either be suctioned out or some have installed their own drain plug. Lots of information out there on the net and some here on BITOG too!
