"It's very sobering," Marc Gaden, spokesman for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission told the Associated Press. "Lake Erie is one of the most productive inland fisheries in the world. It wouldn't be as valuable by any stretch of the imagination if one out of every three pounds of fish were Asian carp."

In places where an invasive species is established, however, some creative entrepreneurs still find ways to work with them. The founder Angie Wu of Two Rivers Fisheries told The Wall Street Journal her inspiration came after she read an article calling the proliferation of Asian carp a "disaster." Knowing most Chinese consider the fish delicious, she effectively markets the catch as a scrumptious "Kentucky white fish" in China.

Quote:
The company is now catching as many as 15,000 Asian carp daily and shipping them to carp-loving Asians. The company nearly doubled its shipments after opening in 2013 and cannot keep up with demand.

"There's just not enough fishermen to take care of what I need," says Jeff Smith, the company's operations manager. "I want 20,000 to 25,000 a day."

The opportunism of water snakes, fishermen, and Asian carp marketers demonstrates that not all the impacts of invasive species are equal, and not all are negative.

There are 1.3 billion Chinese in China, we can easily catch and ship several million Asian Carps to China a day to make some money.

There was a TV program last year or so about this. Actually it is a wonderful problem.

Turning a problem into a profit. Now that's how you run a business.

"Kentucky white fish", ya gotta love marketing.

Their only Kentucky publicity is with KFC.

I'm not sure how frozen or refrigerated carp will do over there because they love them fresh, but they don't mind the tiny bones, not at all.

A real carp fest, if you will.

Yep, MN sucks...

Of course, those not from MN may not understand this.

It sure is a way to make lemonade out of lemons...

But that said, Id still prefer to have native North American species feeding North American people to this... Nothing against the Chinese or their need to eat, but Id still prefer for us to be able to preserve local species for local consumption...

20,000 lbs of invasive carp- .15cents/lb. - $3000 If you assume that is what he is paying the fishermen...if you divide that among 10 fishermen thats only $300/day..so probably not too many fishermen would waste fuel and labor on that low rate.

Real solution- Feed our nations hungry.

Kind of like the red cedar invasion here in Oklahoma. There is a market for the by products from the trees, but the cost of harvesting them is too great to be able to actually run a business.

The Asian Carp invasion has been nothing but a disaster. Being able to sell a few for near nothing doesn't change that.
The defensive barrier keeping them out of the great lakes basin isn't very confidence inspiring either.
I'd like to see a tiny import tariff taken on all products that could contain invasive species, then as this pool of money grows it could be spent to shut down an invasive species before it gets out of control. A few hundred million spent as an invasive species is first identified would probably have stopped most of these in their infancy.

So, we buy our hungry a bunch of fishing poles and tell them to get to work??? Do we need to teach them to fish too?

Unfortunately, afaik, these buggers got loose on the country thanks to the combined ineptitude of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the EPA.

Back in the late 60's early 70's, the big thing around here was to put imported asian grass carp in your ponds to eat the weeds. Everyone was told they were sterile. Obviously they weren't. By mistake, some other non grass carp ( silver, bighead, and black ) got sent from the Far East to ONE guy in Arkansas, the game and fish commission took them, the EPA experimented with them, and, predictably, they got loose. All of the original blacks were supposed to have been destroyed way back then, but they are now showing up in some of our rivers so ones that have been brought in since are now loose. Maybe it wil be too cold up your way for them .....

The grass carp get HUGE but I've never heard of anyone eating them.
