Besides oil analysis, is there anyway to tell of coolant contaimination in motor oil?

Heard of "milky" oil(?). Can anyone elaborate on this?

Thanks.

Detergent oil tends to emulsify water (and coolant) rather than allow it to settle out. Thus the milky appearance of motor oil containing water.

Analysis can determine coolant in your oil at much lower quantities...you'll need more coolant to get the milky effect.

So is there any truth at all the the idea of looking for any green color in the oil? (Since coolant is green at least in most vehicles)

Heat up a frying pan with just a coating of oil in it until is smokes, then drop a drop of the oil in question into it. If it pops and fizzes its got water in it. Don't use the pan for your breakfast eggs! RW

Justin, green color? No way. You'd never see that in coolant contaminated oil. If you did, the oil would have to at least 50% anti-freeze and the oil would still have to almost brand new and clear.

Nope, oil analysis is the best way. Any visual observations are imprecise and you are most likely to have a lot of damage by that time.
