I have an 08 328i and have the free mainentance but was tossing around the idea of doing some in between changes with PU euro to clean anything that might be in there. Anyone have good results? Is this oil really that good at cleaning?

If your car has seen the BMW oil up until now, I doubt it needs much in the way of cleaning.

Running PU isn't going to hurt anything though.

eh. Dealer BMW branded Castrol 5w-30 will get the job done and be inexpensive. The demands required of the N52 are not that great however many BMW owners prefer to do a mid-cycle oil change (~7,000 actual miles).

Ryland: I might add something maybe you already know. If you do decide to use the PU in your BMW, use only the 5w40 which is the only version of PU that carries the BMW LL01 approval.

Thats why he put 5w40 in the subject line, i think.

Just curious, is your 328 direct injection or port injection?

I've got an '09 Z4 with the twin turbo di N54 and I've started using PU 5w40, but no UOA yet. This is a motor that's supposed to be prone to intake deposits. But I don't think UOA would show deposit prevention/cleanup anyway.

Actually, take it one further....it has to be the "Ultra Euro"
version which has the BMW LL01 approval (only found online, not available in stores yet). The standard, easily found Platinum version is LL-04 approved and NOT recommended by BMWNA in their gasoline cars.

Learn more at the BMW website: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Owner/SyntheticEngineOils.aspx

If you're getting the BMW branded 5w30 included free then just stick to that at the recommended interval. I really doubt there's anything to clean up with this oil and mileage.

Not sure what you mean by this, but the old Platinum 5w-40 (before it became Ultra 5w-40) did carry the LL-01 spec:

You are correct, it did.....but no longer. Check their website, according to their website, Platinum has the LL-04 rating, Ultra has no LL rating and Ultra Euro has the LL-01 rating. What I am having trouble finding are the detailed spec sheets to back that up. I believe the one you are linking may be out dated.

Okay, I found the links to the spec sheets on the Pennzoil website:

Ultra: http://www.pennzoil.com/documents/PENNZOILULTRAFullSyntheticMotorOil.pdf Note no BMW approval ratings

Ultra Euro: http://www.pennzoil.com/documents/PENNZOILULTRAEuropean5W40.pdf
Surprisingly they do not list the 5w-30, only the 5w-40, but the 5w-40 has BMW LL-01 approval.

Platinum: The spec data page is currently down for the Platinum product. I will post the page where the link is, so one can check back and click on the link....it is on the lower left corner of the page: http://www.pennzoil.com/#/motor-oil/pennzoil-platinum

Well, that's because Platinum 5w-40 no longer exists. It was replaced by Ultra 5w-40. Whatever Platinum 5w-40 you're seeing out there is old stock.

My point earlier was that there is only one Pennzoil 5w-40 grade available now, and it is LL-01 compliant. It was called Platinum before, now it's called Ultra.

Note in my post above about BMW oil recommendations, they only recommend LL-01 oils for North America. LL-04 oils are only to be used in BMW diesel engines. Apparently they have discovered an incompatibility between LL-04 oils and gasoline typically used in North America (at least in BMW engines).

Here again is the list from BMWNA :http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Owner/SyntheticEngineOils.aspx
