I've been using coastal 10W-40 dino from autozone ($6.68/gal) for the last 2 oil changes, and i really like it so far. anyone else use it? SL rating

Have a UOA done on it when you change oil next time. That'll give some indication of it's performance. Everything else is just a guess short of it turning into jello and the engine throwing a rod.

I almost positive that I used Coastal 10w-40 in the Saturn for a 8-10k drain about 20-30k miles ago with a Champs filter. Didn't seem to run any different...

"when I used it in my 05 Acura TL, the headlights blew out."

Wow! Sounds like some mighty powerful oil.

I've got a batch of coastal 5w-20 in my 2001 Ford Windstar. Only AZ's Valu Craft (or what ever it's called) line was cheaper, but not by much. Sad thing was, I think I paid ~$1.69/qt for the coastal. The next step up Exxon Superflo was close to $2/qt IIRC. Even wallys supertec is around ~$1.50/qt in my area.

JTK on my 5W-20 thread someone stated Coastal doesnt meet Ford's spec for 5W-20.

Its reported that the SuperTech 5W-20 may be the same as ExxonMobil in your area. Look for the CCC on the bottom of the bottles.

The ExxonMobil will easily go 5000 mi changes.

Coastal oil years ago, was the only oil company known for accidentaly putting oil into the wrong advertised container, 5w 30 had 10w 30 in it, ect. Also, i hear lots of bad stuff about coastal, well not bad, jsut evryone seems to reffer to it, as #@$%!. I used coastal atf+3 in my automatic transmission 3 or 4 years ago, new fitler full flush. After 2 years, and like 15,000 miles later, had a mechanic look at it for me, siad it wasnt looking to good....
hope that helps.

Coastal gets alot of flack for that one time incident that was only confined to a few lots and sold regional. I am sure happens more than people think with the other makers and not just Coastal.

Anyway, I have used all the different Coastal lubes over the last 10 years and have had no problems when staying within MFG OCI service charts. Their lubes meet spec, nothing more or nothing less and are priced as such. I have yet to hear of a properly document case of anybody's vehicle blowing up on Coastal lubes within normal OCI's and actually determined by analysis to Coastal's fault.

A lot of hersay is passed on about Coastal lubes with very little documented fact backing such claims. Many of the off brands like Coastal and others get this due to the lower price structure as people always seem to think cheaper is less quality.

Not only have I used Costal Motor Oil, I have used most store brand motor oils from time to time from stores such as Target(Car&Driver), WalMart(SuperTech), PepBoys(ProLine), Sears(Spectrum) and on and on and on!....Some of these oils "SEEMED" to make my engine run smoother and quieter. Maybe it was the particular time of year(warmer weather, low humidity). I really don't know why!

I am the same way in buying whatever house brand oil is cheapest and meets both weight and API spec. Been doing this for the last 15 years and am currently maintaining 4 vehicles with no oil related issues.

As a first & last owner of my vehicles, I would never buy brands like Coastal Oil.... unless I was unemployed or in dire straits financially.

Good for you! I am happy for you, really I am.
