Anyone tried the new Pennzoil Platinum yet?

I have 3 qts of Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 and 1 qt of M1 0W-40 in my Subaru, and I'm waiting for my kits so that I can do a UOA on my recently dumped GC, and a low mile UOA on my current brew (3qt PP, 1 qt M1, 4 oz of Lube Control and 4 oz of Valvoline Synthetic Oil Treatment)

Sorry, if you want pure VOAs and UOAs, you'll have to find someone with higher morals than myself

I just got a case of it for $4.92. Mistake by the label/pricing person. It is in my 2003 Durango 4.7. So far so good.

.... and you didn't question the price (or) catch the error & mention it to the register-clerk?????

Hhhmmm!!!!!

I posted this under another Platinum header, but I will do it again.

It's a mixture of GROUP III+, PAO, AND ESTER. Do not know the exact ratio as they will not give out this information.

So is the Shell oil that goes into Ferarris, isn't it? The Platnium is Group III +. Really nothing to snuff at.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it, comes very close to PAO. But the word "synthetic" has been reduced to a marketing term that refers more to properties than production methods or ingredients.

Agreed.

I am not saying you can't formulate a good with group III, heck you can formulate a good oil with group I. But, GPIII isn't synthetic, requires a VII (polymer) to make a 30 wt. or higher, and costs a lot less than PAO.

Shame on Castrol, the court that allowed this subtrifuge, and the other oil companies taking advantage of this loophole.

Hate to disagree, but PAO's use some VII in them, and I don't know where the idea came from that producing a Group III or III+ cost less than PAO. Back when Pennzoil and Conoco each owned 50% of the new Group II - III refinery in Louisiana, they spent over $500 million. So what is cost to make a Group III base ain't cheap. In some test (not all) a Group III will out perform a PAO. They can call it synthetic, honey, molasses, or whatever they want to, I don't care. If it works I'll use it. And it still has some PAO and Esters in it.

You can formulate a 10W-30 and a 15W-40 (although I'm unaware of any commercially available)with PAO and no VII.

8cSt Group III is the highest vis available and costs $2.43 per gallon, about 30 cents per gallon more than GpII and 1/3rd the cost of PAO.

EDIT: My issue is not with the performance of the oil, rather the mislabeling it 'synthetic' and asking synthetic prices from an unknowing public.

I do prefer M1 though and will be going back to it as soon as it is time to change again"

Why?

What don't you like about PP?

Question it?!?! I paid the price and got the heck out of there as soon as I could.

I have had this PP in there now for 500 miles and it seems OK. Dipstick is still clear honey colored. I do prefer M1 though and will be going back to it as soon as it is time to change again.
