2005 Toyota Tacoma. The manual says GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90 gear oil for the transfer case. I am already running GL-4 MT-90 in the 5 speed gear box and have some leftover. My other choice is to buy 75W-90NS but I'd rather not keep extra bottles of a different lube around if not needed. Will the extra pressure additive in the GL-5 be of any benefit? Seems like a chain driven transfer case should be fairly easy on oil, other than shearing.

First off is there a clutch in that Tcase? If not then it doesn't matter which 75w90 but I would call redline and Toyota to make sure if it specs friction modifier.

If the manual calls for gear oil then they want to additional EP additives. I would use the 75W-90NS, not the MTL90. One bottle shouldn't take up much shelf space

Since you can use EITHER GL4 or GL5, have no fear and use the Redline MT90. Its an excellent gear oil.
There is no need to inventory extra bottles of gear oil.

But, aren't you using GL5 in the front/rearends? why not service the x-case at the same time with the same fluid?

When shopping and there is a choice, use the better rated fluid. If you have the fluid on the shelf and it meets the spec, feel free to use it.

I was going to use the regular 75W-90 redline stuff in front/rear ends. Since this has LS additive in it, I was skeptical about using it in the transfer case. I could go NS all around, but the LS additive boots the viscosity at 100C by 1 cST point.

LSD additives aren't an issue. You can use LSD-equipped gear oils in open diff's and x-fer cases without fear.
If anything, I prefer LSD-additive equipped gear oils simply because most poeple don't know what they have or understand how it works.

I don't recommend LSD added gear oils for manual transmission that have synchros.
