am thinking of taking a short trip . been checking on rental cars and turo is half of what a rental agency would charge. i understand that turo is the air b b of rental cars.

so anyone have experience with renting a car on turo?

No hands on experience, but I got much better deals from big rental companies than I have seen on Turo. I just paid $76 a day, including LDW, for a 2021 Yukon XL compared to the $90-$100 per day I was getting on Turo for a 2017 Yukon XL.

yep, used Turo and it was a little painful (not Turo, but the two hosts that canceled on me because they didn't understand the service), but in the end got a great rental and the owner was super nice. I recommend taking more pictures than the app suggests though, just to be safe. BTW, Turo customer service was excellent and they took care of fixing both of the issues I mentioned before - no issues for me at all, other than a decent amount of time on the phone.

To me where Turo shines is when renting for fun. Took a trip to Phoenix a couple years ago for my brother's wedding and rented a Carrera S through Turo. Great experience. If I was just looking for an A to B, probably would've stuck with Hertz or the like.

Rented twice, happy once and not very happy once. Decided not to do this anymore. Long story short: non-existant liability coverage, bad for both parties.

Can't imagine how desperate people must be to rent their personal vehicles. Not even sure how they make money after liability coverage.
Coworker does it with extra vehicle in Montreal. It makes money on vehicle that would otherwise sit. He seems to cycle thru a different car every 3 years. His main ride is an EV.

People set their own price. If it's too high, nobody rents it. Turo provides liability coverage, I think depending on the deductible, you can get anywhere from 60-90% of what the renters pay. I think the key is utilization like rental car companies. Even at $30 a day, if you can get 70-80% utilization, you can make 5-6k a year. I think for rental car companies, they aim for 85-90%. I've heard of some Turo owners that have their own small fleet of cars. They charge more and have 4-5 cars in their fleet so I guess it's enough for almost a semi part time side hustle.
