I have had my A6 in to the dealer about 6 times for high speed vibration with Pirelli P6s and 17" wheels. Only one time has he gotten the vibration out. Anyone else have a problem with this combo?

My friends SAAB had a problem like this at ridiculously high speeds. Believe it or not SAAB has a travelling engineer and he got sent to my friends city to have a look the car. The solution was to loosen all of the front subframe fasteners and retorque them. Problem solved. I always wondered why SAAB would care about a car that shook at twice the legal freeway speed limit and why the engineer would risk his license to figure it out.

Never owned an Audi, but I have experience with the P6, and my sister's Jag has P6000s. Both, especially the P6000s have exactly the same problem you describe (also cracking sidewalls).

Pirelli = junk.

pscholte,
I've heard some folks complain that Pirellis are hard to balance, which could explain your problem. Check out some of the user comments on your particular tire at www.tirerack.com. Good luck.

If you decide to replace the Pirellis, I just bought some Bridgestone G009s and they are awesome. Great in rain, dry or snow so I highly recommend them.

I REALLY do appreciate hearing from you all. The dealer where I bought the car is part of a family of dealerships that don't, from what I can tell, win many maintenance awards so I asked my wife--remember it's HER car, just ask her--to take it to Discount Tire and see if the tire specialists can "take the shake."

In some Euro countries, Saab, Volvo, BMW, and MB send their own investigators to bad wrecks involving their vehicles. They study the cars and even buy them from the insurance companies if they are totaled.

They strive to make cars safer by studying real life collisions, not just the ones set up for Federal safety regs.

Some companies (like Saab) have their interests focused on the consumer and not solely on profits.

From all I've read on AudiWorld and other forums, P6 are horrible tires in many ways. Maybe that is not the answer you want to hear, but if it was me, I would take this opportunity to buy myself different tires.

If you really want to try to fix these P6, find a tire place that has a Hunter GSP9700 high speed road force balancer and a technician that knows how to use it properly (very important!). If the tire is out of round (impossible to balance), it'll tell you right there.

Yep, I've heard P6's can blow out pretty easily when confronted with a decent size pothole. I'd replace them.

Well, the verdict is in: tires WAY out of balance (despite six dealer "balancings") plus one considerably bent rim and one slightly bent (low profile performance tires and Colorado roads are apparently not a marriage made in heaven)...dealer never said a thing about them when he "balanced" the tires. Not the best answer I could have heard but had an expert balancer and so situation is much improved.
