So here it is i have been running Edge for the last 2200 miles and with the 5-30 it burnt off 2 quarts already, now the truck has had a fair amount of idle time, as it has been 8 maybe less the last couple night ans has been staying rather cool everynight since well about mid october. just curious if anyone else has had this issue at all

I doubt it "burnt off" but consumed/burned in the cylinders is a definite possibility.

I'm pretty sure the noack number was relatively low..

The 8.1 has problems with intake manifold gaskets, mine started using oil at about 80k and the dealer knew the problem before I finished describing it. Maybe yours too?

GM big-blocks in general tend to consume a fair amount of oil - have since the early days.

that would figure, i know the motor from the factory was rather well known for burning oil off, and does foul plugs, ill know how bad here in march when i replace the plugs.

I have about the same amount of miles on my current fill of Edge with no noticeable consumption. Using 5W-30 as well, and I've been driving my car very hard. It's seen a fair amount of redlines and speeds that I won't mention.

Granted, the numbers are reversed... mine's in a 1.8, not a 8.1

I've got a 8.1 in a motorhome and it's rated for 400 hp and 550 ft-lb, it drinks a quart every 1.5k miles. Manual says up to one quart a k mile is normal.

It's done this since day one, mile one.

Don't sweat it.

Good God! Isn't V-MaxLife a Synthetic Blend? It's not a full synthetic right?

alright ...that still doesn't relieve my thoughts of running such a thick oil in my car ...although my car has been running strong with it ...

I've been using German Castrol (Syntec 0w30) in a 2000 Camry, 2003 Mazda Tribute v6, and I've run it in my 2002 Lancer.

12.1 cSt @ 100c!

I've considered thicker before. A minor loss in fuel economy but more piece of mind =)

Yeah i've been running the maxlife blend in my dads 97 camry 5SFE and it seems to run really good on it.

It wouldn't hurt any switching to edge. You might notice it's a little more responsive going with a thinner oil. As far as protection.. i personally don't think there would be any gain, maxlife is really good oil and given the price i wouldn't buy edge. I have 5 quarts in my garage from the AAP sale that will go in the camry next.

Getting back to the OP's engine, I'd go with a thicker oil.

You've mentioned this is severe service, with a fair amount of idle time, so fuel will be getting in the oil, and accelerating oil consumption.

I'd start with a switch the Maxlife 5W-30. It's both thicker and stouter for your service. If you insist on a synthetic, go with M1 HM 10W-30 or Maxlife synthetic 5W-30 (if you can find it).
