I installed iridium IX plugs in my girlfriend's 16 year old Subaru Leonie 1.8L, gladly throwing out the big electroded Bosch plugs. Idle was perfect where previously it sputtered, the hesitation on acceleration was gone, revving was smoother and no top end miss. The Bosch's I threw out didn't seem to be eroded or fouled or excessively gapped. These iridium plugs were the best thing to happen to this car, even better than the Delvac 1 I dropped in.

These plugs came straight out of my WRX and were probably supposed to be a heat range mis-match but they work good. These fine electrode plugs seem to siut a wide range of engine conditions. Just look in an NGK product guide; many different conventional plug types seem to be replaced by far fewer iridium plugs.
 
2000wrx: You stuck your old used iridium IXs in your girlfriend's Leonie? And it cured the stuttering? That's a heck of an endorsement.

I did it as part of my post car purchase routine which is to dump whatever fluids/consumables are in the car and start with new. Who knows, the plugs probably didn't have more than 25000km on them, looked in very useable condition, so, in they went. I would say the fine centre electrode and bevelled ground electrode design helped kick the combustion process along more so than the old fat Bosch's ever did.

I just re-read my first post and I hope 'sputtered' didn't sound like the car could barely hold idle, perhaps 'tick' or 'miss' would better describe the situation. I am well aware of the placebo effect when making minor adjustments to cars but it certainly made the car pleasantly driveable.
 
OK, help me out here. I don't claim to know too much about plugs except that a Datsun 240Z needs NGK not Bosch or Autolite or Champion and my turbo SAAB wanted copper NGK not Platinum to run best. Otherwise, I just run plain copper plugs from Champion or NGK.

SOooo... Sparkplugs.com lists Denso iridium center electrode as 4mm, NGK IX as 6mm. Are they right? Also, if I buy an iridium plug with a "standard" ground electrode, don't I still have to re-gap or replace at a nearly-"standard" interval? Do I want a Champion "gold" plug with the copper-core ground electrode for best conductivity? Or are plugs like wires in that lowest resistance does not inherently equal most desirable or best performance?

Will better conductivity (i.e. iridium or copper-core ground) help cover-up a coil pack with sub-standard output? If the rest of the ignition system is up to par, can I ever hope to get anything (besides a warm fuzzy feeling and a reference to Oakley sunglasses) out of the extra $10/plug I spend on iridium?
 
yes, the denso iridium's at $12/plug have the 0.4mm center iridium electrode. The electrode is finer ( thinner or sharper ) than the ngk's at 0.6mm or 0.7mm. The thinner and sharper you can make the electrode (where spark comes from), the easier it is for the spark to jump the gap and the lower the voltage needed for there to be a spark. End result "should" be better performance. That is why you pay more for the denso 0.4mm than the ngk's.

You do not gap any iridium plug as far as I am aware of. At most, you can only close the gap if the particular plug has a 0.050-0.060" gap and your car is old with an older ignition system which specs 0.030"-0.040" spark plug gap. The iridium plugs, which are also called "fine wire electrode" spark plugs, can inherently run larger gaps because the electrode is so thin and easier for the spark to happen.

Iridium's are advertised to last longer than platinum spark plugs, so you should not have to replace them at "standard" intervals. At $8+ a plug, I certainly wouldn't. You should get 30k-50k without question. The biggest problem is the plug threads seizing in the cylinder head if left in there for 6 years or 100k miles and anti-sieze lube isn't used. The shell and threads are no different and can rust.

My best guess is because iridiums are designed to fire easier, it would help out in an application that had a weak coil. But at $8-12/plug, that's about $50 and only band-aiding the problem. Not the best way to go, probably better spending the money on a new coil and ensuring the ignition is %100. If it isn't, then plugs become a waste if they're not getting good spark in the first place.

There's a lot of hoopla on the web about copper plugs being the best for heat dissipation and preventing detonation, and how copper is "a better conductor". Most of it is misinformation and info taken out of context. Some brand of plugs may run better is certain engines, but fact is the 2 requirements are the correct spark plug reach into the cylinder and the correct heat range plug. Some plugs may have different electode and ground strap designs, which will certainly influence performance especially if the tip is projected versus one that isn't. As for platinum's (or iridiums) being more likely to cause detonation because they don't dissipate heat as good as the metal copper, that's misinformation. If your platinum/iridium is too hot and causing detonation, then you need a colder plug simple as that. And conductivity is irrelevant as well, people see 10-6 vs 10-8 ohms and think that means something. It doesn't. Air/fuel ratio, heat, gasoline quality are factors that are orders of magnitude bigger in influence. That would be like saying my car is faster in the morning because it's before I eat breakfast/lunch/dinner, or after I take a dump, and the car is 0.5 pounds lighter.
 
forgot to mention,
have the ngk's in the car and they're running good. I don't have hard facts that prove that they are better. It feels like there's a little better throttle response, but that might just be because of "new" plugs not necessarily iridiums.

have the denso's in the boat, 4-cyl 130hp. I also repropped to a 4-blade propeller, been tweaking the junk carb to get more power so it's most likely a package deal. But in getting up on one ski this weekend, the boat pulled me up quicker and I didn't drown as usual. So in this case, the $50 worth of plugs I think were worth it. Had been running AC-mr43lts. And the oem gap is 0.040 or 0.045". I just threw the denso's in, and there gap I'm pretty sure was at least 0.050". Boat is 2002, has modern electronic ignition, only one coil, and it will idle down to 500 rpm which is pretty good for a 4-cyl.
 
One bad thing about my hemi- some of these exotic plugs get darn expensive when you've got 16 of them to change......
 
I read a test between platinum and iridium plugs on a mustang where they tested hp on a dyno and they got a small hp boost with the iridium. Not that significant, but other performance sites all tend to think Denso Iridiums are the best plug out there.

Same here. But I usually change plugs every 30k mi. The Plat.+4s did begin to show their age at the end of the 30k. The NGK Iridiums are still going strong @ 40k mi.
 
i'm currently running a iridium in my 15hp briggs tractor and it is definetly rev's up silky smooth and idles nice compared to the champion that came out and i seem to get a bit more fuel left in the tiny tank (1.5 gal) also at the end of the day.

i routinely pull plugs on my vehicles to take a look and sometimes change out using denso or ngk's. fwiw i would definelty switch to the iridiums on my next change seeing the effects it had on my tractor.. not quite the same technology as a modern engine but was still very noticable.

I am currently running Denso VK20 iridium spark plugs in my 2001 model 2.2L toyota camry.
Far better than PK20TR-11.
Also Volker is another good brand very cheap **8.50 per plug.160000km/2year warranty.

I have to agree-- I frequent an isuzu forum (own a rodeo).. Lots of folks over there stay away from Botch plugs because, for some unknown reason, there is a high occurance of "issues" that seem to crop up when using them- most common, being that the check engine light comes on.

I chose champion platinums at about $2.27 each, they work fine.
 
Picked up some Delco iridiums. Interestingly, they are stamped with "NGK" and say "Made In Japan" on the box.

I'm not expecting any improvement other than fresh plugs.
 
My new Tundra V-8 came with iridiums (according to a decal on the engine and the owners manual). Since the service interval is listed as 120,000 miles, I suspect it is mainly for long life.

The thicker electrode versions are generally rated to last longer. The thinner give better spark performance.
