Hi folks,

So I'm looking towards a used 2019+ CX-30 premium or CX-5 GTR/Signature to replace my dead focus. I know how much BITOG members with their mazdas love them so I was wondering if anybody had any updates on their ownership and experience with their newer Mazda CX-30s or CX-5s.

Main goal is more space, comfort, and nice interior bits for a solo/2-person roadtrips than my focus provided. AWD and turbo isn't needed but definitely a plus, I 100% want a sunroof and the heated/cooled seats which means I'll be looking towards their higher trims. I haven't heard anything really bad about any Mazdas except their tendency to rust early and quickly. I've also never had a car with a sunroof so I don't know how common sunroof leaks are.

The Mazda Skyactiv vehicles began to appear about 10 years ago, and at least around here in central Virginia I'm not seeing any rusty ones. Since 2015 every Mazda sold in the US has used the Skyactiv technology, which includes the body design with special steels.

Mazda seems to have greatly improved the rust situation. But members from the road-salt areas need to tell us what they're seeing. I hope they'll chime in.

The CX-30 or CX-5 with the non-turbo 2.5 has enough power in my experience. The examples I've driven did not have AWD and I didn't miss it, but my area doesn't have too much snow. The 2022 CX-30, CX-5, and other US–spec Mazda SUVs/CUVs will have AWD standard.

For space, instead of the CX-30, you might prefer the CX-5, and lots of them are around so your choices will be better.

IIRC 2012 was Year #1 for Skyactiv. My sister bought a 2012 Mazda3i Touring.
We bought a 2016 Mazda3 Sport (base) and loved it. Then a friend bought a 2016 Mazda CX-3 and she loves it.
Then my brother and SIL leased a 2018 Mazda CX-5 and it drove like a dream.

2 weeks ago we traded in our 2016 w/20K. It's fine so far! It's AWD and has heated but not cooled seats.
Blind spot and lane drift warnings are welcome.
Auto makers can take their "heads up" displays and stick 'em in their noses. Those things are vague and distracting.

I'm reading up on Mazdas and am trying to decide if hot oil rust proofing is necessary.

Another decision I'm wrestling with when to do my first transmission drain & fill. Is 30K or 60K the number?

Last month, I sold my 2020 Tucson Ultimate to CarMax, then bought a 2019 CX-5 Signature with 13,300 miles from them. Signature came with 2.5L Turbo AWD with just about everything. Yes, sunroof, too. GTR and Signature trims are pretty hard to come by, especially low miles and from non-rust areas. I end up had it shipped from So Cal for $975 transfer cost. So far so good. The only problem was worn tires, at 13,300 miles, OEM Toyo tires were too worn for my taste. I'm waiting for Michelin Cross Climate II sale at Costco, which is coming just before Thanksgiving Day.

Over 80K miles of ownership, my only complaints about my GTR CX5 really, are no boost in 1st and 2nd gear in under 20*F weather, and the mirror folding motors failed often. I went through 5 of them. Otherwise, good car with no real quirks.

Here in West, almost never see 20*F weather.
Yeah, I don't like auto-folding mirrors, had it disabled already. I want the mirrors fold when I want it to not every time I lock the CX-5.

That's good to know from everybody. I loved test driving the CX-30 premium w/ AWD, albeit I didn't really like the engine noise and the suspension was surprisingly stiff for a crossover but I loved everything else about the car. The only other vehicles I might consider over the Cx-30/5 is the VW Taos/Tiguan or maybe a 2019 Ford Escape depending on the prices.

This is just my own opinion but the CX5 will have the advantage with more room for rear seat passengers and cargo. They both have the same power train so fuel economy will be close.

Your chances of finding a used CX5 are also much higher.

It also has IRS instead of a similar arrangement to Charlton Hesston's chariot, out back.

So I pulled the trigger and got me a CPO 2019 CX5 GT with the GT Premium package. It only had 17k miles on it and has all the features I want so I'm pretty satisfied with the purchase. The engine/trans combo is surprisingly peppy for a 4 cyl and the gearing/shifts are perfect.
