Anybody getting tired of South Main Auto?

I just can’t get over some of the money these guys are making...Chris Fix is pulling in $950,000 a year. Which kind of blows my mind because I’m not even sure the guy is a mechanic. But yet his videos are informative and well done. Meanwhile Eric the Car Guy is only making $50,000 grand? And he’s definitely a well informed technician with a lot of really good pointers. But his video production is poor compared to someone like Chris Fix. I don’t know what South Street Auto is making, but it’s probably over $100,000 off of YouTube. And then there’s Scotty K, worth 9 million. How would you like to be Scotty’s neighbor in Texas? The guy has junk piled up in his driveway and bombs up and down the street on test drives. Guy is worth 9 million and his place looks like a junk yard? He just kind of cracks me up. I mean, I like some of his videos. He’s kind of grown on me (he used to just annoy me), but it cracks me up that the guy has done that well and still seems to live like he’s making $40,000 grand a year. I actually kind of like that, I guess.

How do we know that any of those values are real?

Is it reported somewhere? Calculated based upon subscribers and views?

Honest question.

Not sure how someone can be worth $xM based upon YouTube. I don’t know that any of these videos are tangible assets. Maybe some diy videos are, but anything that gets stale... if the personality gets sick or dies, and doesn’t crest new content, now views, no money. And the person isn’t a salable asset.

Yes, good question. I watched a video and it broke down views, subscribers, advertising and what YouTube takes away in a percentage of earnings. Google “what does Eric the car guy make”. And someone breaks it down to the penny off of YouTube income. I found it pretty interesting.

Chris Fix just seems disingenuous to me. The guy isn't a technician you guessed correctly.

I never really watched him except for once or twice to see what he was about.

My go to are ETCG, South Main Auto, Thomas EXOVCDS, and The Humble Mechanic, the last two guys are VW specialists. Thomas is super.

There are websites that "analyze" someone's YT channel and makes wild-*** guesstimates on their income potential. Problem is, it's often stupid, worthless ranges like $9000-$120000/year.

On the other hand, there are some channels out there that show their YT revenue details. Autovlog is one. He's the guy that was a Ford dealership salesman driving a leased Fusion. He made videos like "what happens when you put the car in reverse while driving" (nothing), "how far can you drive on DTE=0", and so on. From his YT revenue, he bought a brand new AMG C63, then a Ferrari, and so on. He bought his wife a brand new F150 Raptor. This is presumably all from his YT money. He quit his "day job", by the way.

Do any of you keyboard analysts ever contemplate in your Excel sheets of everything analyzation that 95% of his viewers are looking for help in repairing their vehicles and appreciate someone videoing the procedure or something close to show them someone else's experience?

Mike with Outdoors with the Morgans just bought a $70,000 Kubota Mini-Ex......just to have. If there's ever a deserving family benefiting from entertainment on YT, it's the Morgans, 100%. This country would be 100 times better off with 200 more million of them.

I’ll have to check them out.

Never miss a SMA video. He's straight forward, has a sense of humour, shows his process of diagnosis, and works on cars that have rust...just like what I deal with on my older cars. PHAD is also very good, he is not trying to look so professional, but his diagnosis methods are top notch.
ETCG is okay, now that he's flushed the Fairmont videos downstream.

Just started watching Watch Wes Work, he's in the farm area west of Chicago, deals with lots of rusty and old cars that his customers don't want to spend money fixing beyond the bare minimum, but once again his shows are entertaining and his engineering background shows up in the details he shares with the viewers.

Chris Fix does a high quality job with his videos, but I can't say I learn anything from watching his stuff. I think he appeals to a much younger crowd that would rather make it look pretty rather than diagnose and repair correctly.

Scotty is click-bait and BS, that he is making so much money shows the average viewer is not interested in facts, only loud opinions.

Nope, I'm subscribed to his channel and enjoy his videos. I also enjoy watching Watch Wes Work, Pine Auto Diagnotics, ScannerDanner as well as a few others. Car Wizard is also fun to watch, although you don't see much of the work being done.
