I was diagnosed last night with acute bronchitis. First time ever having such a thing. I had no idea what it was at first. I have had a cough for about 3 weeks now. All of a sudden last night my throat felt like there was something stuck in it and I couldn't stop coughing to the point of vomiting. Eventually I was coughing so bad that I couldn't breath. My mom was able to take me to the ER (this was 10:30 at night, no insurance by the way). But when you stop breathing, you need to find out whats going on. Anyway I have scrips for an inhaler, a zpack, and some prednisone. The horrible pokey itchy feeling in my throat isnt as bad as it was thankfully, and the coughing has lessened as well. Hoping it will stay that way through the night, I only was able to sleep about 2 hours last night. It was awful. Anyway, have any of you had bronchitis before? How long did it take you to recover? Any home remedies that you have tried that have worked? I just need to get some rest tonight. Thanks.

I have had chronic bronchitis (i.e. walking pneumonia) before. When you can hear each breath gurgling in your lungs and can't sleep due to the gurgling / percolating / blockage, it's no fun.

I haven't had it since I retired. I'm convinced my exposure at work with people who had young kids was the culprit. My sinus passages are shot in connection with my migraines, so it's easy for me to pick up a respiratory disease.

Rest, don't let it turn into pneumonia.

About a week you will feel better, but still take it easy as i can come back. Cough will decrease markedly in a day or two.

I've had mild bronchitis.

It was a persistent cough after a flu; which did not get better, with periods of actual bronchitis where i was hacking up colored phelgmn.
The coughing and lots of phlegmn irritated things and made things worse, and possibly reinfected even after good periods.

Through all of this, you don't feel terrible, you can go about your life, and be walking wounded, it's just an irritation and you know you aren't 100%.

This was like over 2 years worth of time and people thought i was like i've done 20 years of smoking or always sick

So definitely half of it is killing what's in there, and the other half is getting your lungs and body back in sync and fully recovered so other stuff doesn't' just re-infect you.
I think definitely it's made my lungs and more susceptible to other injury and then before going through this 2 year ordeal.
So it suits you to take precaution and steps to really knock it out so you don't go down the same path

As far as home remedies:

-Get yourself a digital room thermometer with humidity meter ($10 at amazon or hardware store). Be sure that stays in the "OK", and around 50% relative humidity.

-Get yourself a humidifier if above is not achievable.

-If your room is dirty or your air is not very fresh, take efforts to change that. Vacuum, clean your room more often as well as washing your bedding more often with clean-rinse detergents. The dust and mold or even detergents don't help your recovery. Get fresh air in there. Air purifier if your outside air is not good and you don't have access to fresh air.

-if you have weird [censored] on your tongue or mouth get a tongue scrapper and mouthwash and use it morning and night before you go to bed. Same with your sinuses, if you have lots of stuff in your sinuses, you may need to consider using a sinus rinse.

-As a homeopathic remedy i tried all kinds of teas and tonics including the usual OTC cold/cough suppresents (these consist mostly of methol), and weird asian eastern medicine things like stewed peaches or pears or lemons and honey and other medicines (also consisting mostly of menthol). None of those made a difference...exceot

I will say what did help (for me) was "real" ginseng tea (korean granular)actually seemed to make a difference for me.
You may need to go to healthfood or asian market or online to get this, and be forewarned ginseng is relatively expensive.
Just mix a packet with warm/hot water and it makes a not-horrible tasting light tea. Drink every morning. It's over a $1 a packet, but rather then hacking up and coughing all the time it's worth it.

Maybe see if you can get better on your own. But when it's been like a month and you're still coughing, and you're feeling miserable every start of the morning, then you start reaching for your wallet and plunk down the money for magic ginseng tea.

Go get the Z pack and get started on it. Stay hydrated. Blow your nose and cough up as much of that [censored] as you can. In other words , get it out of your lungs.
And rest. You will need some strength to recover.

I had it back in February. The others here who said get a lot of rest and take the Zpack are absolutely correct. Rest/Sleep as much as possible, drink a lot of fluids, chicken soup and gatorade do help a lot. Take the doc's advice and give yourself time to heal otherwise you could end up with pneumonia. I am surprised you did not get a nebulizer, at least a 10 minute session at the ER, it would have helped kick start your recovery.

Chronic, yes.

Similar symptoms as well. Respiratory distress, etc.. I had a breathing machine, and a specialist work with me regularly. I've always felt my death is going to respiratory related when I am elderly. IE: pneumonia.

Recommendations: Drink water, your body needs to replenish fluids and recover. Rest plenty. I was nearly unable to breathe at all, and was hospitalized. I took a breathing machine home. Perhaps you can see if they are rentable?

Lastly, I strongly recommend health insurance. I'm not judging you, but balance what could happen to you vice the cost..

I told my brother who was considering a family, and a child he was irresponsible if he didn't purchase insurance.

Again, not judging you but think about the future. A lot has happened to me in my life.

If I had the money I would, believe me.

u probably have a avian flu strain,

1. get an inhaler
2. get over the counter mucinex (generic is guaifenesin is much cheaper)
3. if you have a temperature, you need antibiotics
4. drink a lot of fluids
5. honey and other naturally sweet fruits

the most expensive item probably be the inhaler, see if you know someone who has prescription drug coverage, get one from them. else it is like 80 to 100 at walmart, you might have to ask the doctor for one, he/she might not prescribe it automatically.

I second the guifeniesin, you can get it cheap in tablet form at walmart. It has helped me get rid of a cough that wouldn't go away for a month after a cold.

If you don't have the money for insurance now, just wait until you rack up a bunch of medical bills. Just this one visit to the ER is probably going to run several thousand dollars. You need medical insurance, even if it means cutting other costs so you can afford it.

I've had it to the point of "walking pneumonia". The last real bad bout took me over a month to feel decent again.

I get socked with that or a real bad flu every 2yrs or so, regardless of flu shots and I don't smoke.

Shift work and poor sleep put a hurting on me.

Just an example of potential medical bills.. It looks like my wife's recent 2-3day hospital stay for appendicitis will be in the $13K range. Hospital room/board for 2days alone was $11K. It's going to cost me over $3K out of pocket and that's with "health insurance".

Z-pac, Mucinex extra strength(1200mg guifenesin,60mg dextromethorphan hbr)

Learning how to cough effectively..The more air you have in your lungs the higher up the cough.Throat cough like when you inhale sharply and then cough... thats all throat ,not productive.
Try letting half the air out of your lungs (this will deepen the cough),then cough medium repetitious short coughs WITHOUT inhaling until you actually run out of air to cough.Again ,from the diaphram.Repeat... Until you can cough without much air in your lungs on the way of bringing the phlem out.

It hurts ..burns pretty badly, but you can control the range of cough and it will run your abs like crazy but you'll be able to breath easier afterward.
Next, work on increasing your lung capacity .Do this by inhaling deeply hold it as long as you can safely..more and more deeply over a period of weeks. These exercises with pay dividends later when you'll need that extra capacity.
Albuterol inhaler, these used to be available OTC in the brand Primitine .no longer at least in the states. It worked too well, they had to take it away.
Advair (or similar)expensive.

Having grown up with childhood asthma, many bouts of bronchitis and a few pneumonia i learned how to strengthen and enlarge my lungs, lots of swimming ,running, biking and holding my breath(i was up to three minutes at one point)made life from bearable to enjoyable.

Sometimes the bronchial airways get so inflamed that you need an inhaler like symbicort or some corticosteroid. If thats the case sometimes otc medicines especially with decongestants can make it worse, exacerbating broncho-spasm. Use the inhaler as directed , sometimes it may take 3 days for the coughing to get better. This happened with me. a week of symbicort.

generic Mucinex guaifenesin

its about 4 bucks for a big bottle of generics or 25$ for a big box of the real thing behind the pharmacy counter

I prefer the mucinex-D that has real Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine) with it.

I cant sleep while taking it so I take it early morning till evening but not before bed.. after a few days it really helps loosen all the slop up to cough it out.

I used to have acute sinusitis 2-3x a year and would get bronchitis and pneumonia frequently to the point of missing a week of work at a time.

Fortunately, I finally found something that works for me and haven't had any for over a year now.
