OK, I have a bunch of SL Mobil 1 0w-30 that I got from the AZ clearance. I want to thicken it up so I was going to add some 15w-50 to this. Only problem is I can only find 15w-50 in the Mobil 1 EP.
From what I have read, EP is basically the same as the SL version, just more ZDDP right? So there should be no issues with this mix (3 qts of 0w-30 and 1 15w-50). I already have 1 bottle of SL 15w-50 that I am using for 1 change. The only other Mobil 1 I have been able to find that is thicker is the new SM xw-40 Truck and SUV.

Just a FYI,the reason I am doing this is Hyundai has released a memo for my engine to use thicker oils to prevent valve train noise. Although I have none with the GC or 10w-30 RP I have used, I know M 1 0w-30 is on the thinner side.

BTW, this is for a 7500 mile OCI (max allowed for warranty).

I would see no issues. The M1 EP just has extra detergents in it to keep the oxidation down, and more additives and SuperSyn to help with the long drain. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

From an additive standpoint, SL M1 and SM M1 EP probably look about the same on paper.

Shouldn't be any issues, imo.

I don't think it should cause any problem. I got a bunch of the 0W-30 during the Autozone clearance too. I picked up some M1 0W-40 on clearance at Walmart to mix with mine.

When the engine blows under warranty are you going to say you blended your own oil? Will Mobil stand behind you? Sorta half joking.

My personal viewpoint: No issues with blending these oils, IMHO.

Yea, I know it won't blow up or anything, just trying to apease (sp) myself when I do it.
You need to know that up untill I started reading here about a year ago, I was a 10w-30 only 3000 mile OCI type guy. I knew synthetics were better in many aspects and could go longer, I just could not see paying that money for it and changing it every 3000 miles. I have learned much since coming here.

on my second oil samples using 5w30 M1(SL), I added a 1/2qt of 15/30 M1(SL) when I put a new oil filter on halfway though the 10,000mile run.(total oil cap. 3.75qts) when the sample was tested it showed a SUS VIS of 66.0 / my first run of 5w30 M1 after 10,000miles had come out at 59.7(straight 5w30 the whole run) I know this maybe off subject a little bit being it was not using the new SM or EP but I figured it may give you an idea of how much of a wieght change it can make.

Thanks. The memo I saw said use up to a 20w-50 for this engine, so I am not worried about that at all. I will find out how this is in a few months when the RP comes out.

On a side not, should I bother getting a UOA on the RP? It is SL and I don't know how it would compair to the SM. RP will probably be my oil once my 4 oil changes of this Mobil 1 mix and 6 of GC are gone. This will not be for probably 3 yrs from now, so who knows where oil will be by then.
