TIA- I have a Montana Rifle M1999 long action [barreled] I had sitting in the gun cabinet for years. It's chambered in 6.5x284 Winchester I'd like to put into a stock. It's a DIY project and I was wondering if it would fit in stock for a long action Winchester M70? Anyone familiar with this your feedback or suggestions for a stock that won't break the bank is greatly appreciated.

Montana rifle are very high end, I know that some/most/maybe all were of a Mauser pattern, like the M70. Are you trying to just stick a stock on it or pillar or glass bed? If so, I would say that it is a DIY project, kind of........if you have the right skills and "stuff"

But yes, the action should fit into a M70 stock......the variable would be the barrel profile.

Pics?

Are you tring to go heirloom wood, or heavy duty polymer\fiberglass?

Thanks @burbguy82! I'm not sure exactly how high end it is, I don't remember breaking the bank to buy it. It's all stainless steel. I bought it new probably around 1999-2000, and it sat since then. I'm looking to get it into an in expensive stock, see how it fits/fires and bed it if needed. It is a Mauser pattern, a M70 clone IIRC, long action, with a varmint contour barrel. I'll get some pictures of it and post them within the next day or so. The problem I'm seeing with most of the lower priced stocks is the barrel contour is "Sporter" this barrel is IIRC a "Varmint" contour which is thicker. I don't know if those stocks have enough meat to hog them out to a varmint contour, and I'm not looking to drop $500 or more into a stock at this time. I saw a tactical stock which might work, operative word might, but they're out of stock and it wouldn't be my first choice. Tactical Works Stock I'm sure there are others that might work. I was hoping someone here did a similar project.

Excuse the mess I'm in the process of cleaning up and organizing. These pictures show the action, barrel, and approximate taper of the barrel. Once past the 30.32 mm mark the taper is a straight 22.51 mm the entire 26" length of the barrel.

Very, very few stocks will not accept a Varmint profile barrel, which is not a particularly heavy profile.

In the unlikely event the barrel won’t clear, it is very easily remedied with an appropriately sized dowel wrapped in sandpaper.

Thanks, that is exactly what I plan on doing. I don't think I'll have to do much sanding, if any. I ended up ordering a Bell and Carlson stock Model 70 M40 style for a heavy contour barrel. I might have a little more room, and no sanding. I spoke with B&C about it and they said it should be fine, and to shoot it first before messing with bedding, which is what I had planned on. I should have the stock this week. Shooting it, that won't be for a while.
