Any doubts about 10,000 miles on various M1 products?

All I can say is all my cars are Hondas, and I do no trips less than 13 miles.

I use the following three viscosities (recommended in my owners manual):

M1 0W20 (5W20 recommended)

M1 5W30 (5W30 recommended)

M1 10W30 (10W30 recommended)

Just wanted opinions whether there is any concern for 10,000 motor oil life based on any used oil analysis of Mobil1 synthetic.

I looked back and could not find any significant comments specific to the 10,000 mile mark.

There are not too many uoa reports posted in the used oil analysis section of this site of Mobil 1 0W20 going over 6,000 miles. Most average around 5K and show very good results. There are about 10 or so reports of M1 5W30 which coincidently average about 10,000 miles and show excellent results. I found none of Mobil 1 10W30 over 7,500 miles, but would expect it to be similar to the 5W30 if that viscosity was in use closer to 10K miles.

While the 0w20 and 5W20 oils have posted impressive wear numbers, personnally I'd be leary of running the 0W20 oil for 10K, even if Honda calls for 10K OCI's.

Hello all, and thank you for allowing the membership...this is my first post. Oil and filters is a subject I ejoy learning about. As a result of my personal studies, research and experiences, I use and recommend the use of Mobil 1, 10W30, filters sold by the manufactures and 5K changes. I find it interesting that Mobil makes no mention of extended changes as a part of its marketing efforts.

I own a 2001 Mercedes C240. Suggested OCI's are 10K, and are covered by warranty through 50K (free). However, Mobil 1 5W30 is not an approved product for this car. The dealership uses Mobil 1 10W30.

They can't. If they told people to run extended OCIs, they would risk getting sued by people who lost their new car warranty because they extended their OCIs beyond what's recommended in the owner's manual. Most of these manuals still recommend 3-5K mile OCI, regardless whether dino or synthetic oil is used.

Mobil 1 10W-30 sounds like a great choice for you and your climate.

If Mobil 1 5W-30 is not an "approved product" for your car then how can Mobil 1 10W-30 be? Both are basically the same except for cold weather performance where the 5w-30 has a slight edge over the 10W-30. Thats like saying you have to use Amsoil XL7500 10W-30 becuase the owners manual says 10W-30, you can most definetly use 0W-30 with no problems!. I can see that maybe a 10W-30 Petrol oil will be more shear stable than a 5W-30 Petrol oil, but with a good synthetics.. Shear stability is already very good weather it be a 0W-30 or a 10W-30.

here's a link to my oil analysis. it's for a subie, but if you have similar driving habits it might be relevant. i'm going to run one more analysis at 7500 miles, then try to get up to 10,000 miles.

used oil analysis

M1 0w-40 is rated to go 30,000 miles in a gas engine, as per Mercedes 229.1, BMW LL-01 and VW 503.01 manufacturer specs.

Quatro Pete:
I would point out that Amsoil in fact *does* advocate extended intervals, and is perfectly happy to warranty that their oil will not fail and cause your motor to suffer damage, provided you follow their directions about filter replacement, usage conditions and OCIs.
I think Mobil isn't so much concerned with avoiding lawsuits due to extended intervals.. if that really matterred, Amsoil would be bankrupt.
I find it much more likely that Mobil has one of the following 2 motivations to not advocate extended OCIs:
A) Not annoying automakers
B) Selling more Mobil 1.
Mobil 1, despite being maligned by certain members of this BBS, appears to be able to go 10K in most applications.

No, I'm asking if it's 40°, is there reason to believe people will be cold.

S2000Driver,

Here is a thread related to your vehicle.

http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=004855#000000

If you want an extended drain, 7,500+ miles, I would go with Amsoil in the 5w or 10w-30 variety. As mentioned earlier, Mobil 1 should be good for 7,500/6 months.

Roger,

Honda has lowered their OCIs since going to the 5w-20 recommendation. My wife and I just purchased a 2004 Odyssey that has the 7,500/6 months for normal driving and 3 months/3,750 miles for severe service in the owner's manual.

I would say it depends on the engine and how long to 10k miles. Civics and Accords are easy on the oil. S2000 and other performance engines may beat the oil up.

I use to go 7500 miles on Mobil 1 and once 10k on an Accord 4cyl that I sold at 90k miles. Father in law now has 167k miles on it and runs cheap bulk oil. Doesn't seem to run as smooth as when I took care of it. He does spend more effort keeping the exterior clean though.

I let my mother in law run Amsoil ATM out to 1 year and 13k miles. 3.5 qts in and 3.5 qts drained out. Couldn't measure any usage. Kept the Amsoil filter in the whole year. Now running a Mobil 1 filter for the next year with ATM.

As oil changes go, I've been kicking around different oil change schemes for a couple months, currently using synthetic all around.

For the S2000, I was going to change the oil AND filter every 5,000 miles so the pressure drop in the filter is minimal at high flow rates.

For my 99 CRV and 03 Element, I was going to change the oil every 5,000 miles and the filter ever other change (at an even 10,000 multiple). The filter is hard to get to and I don't drive these vehicles at high RPM much at all.

So my intention was to find out whether or not I might as well just go 10,000 miles on the oil on these two daily drivers, each which sees about that many miles in a year.

I think Mobil 1 10w-30 with some LC is your best bet. I also think there was a S2000 on 10w-30 that showed excellent results. I'll try and find it.

As I recall when Mobil 1 first came out it was touted as being good for 15,000 miles with a filter change at 7500. Thing is, doing so would void a new car warranty so my guess is that's why they dropped it. I'm older than I look.

John in the ATL:
Are you sure about those OCI's? My '03 Odyssey's OCIs are 7500 / 1year for normal and 3750/ 6mo for severe.

I'm wondering why the change in the time only?

Matt89,

I believe that you are correct about the Odyssey. I will double check the owner's manual.

I believe that my Maxima uses the 3 month/3,750 severe and 6 month/7,500 miles OCI.
