Hi Folks,

I just bought a '01 Isuzu Trooper S 4WD. It has 117K. I purchased it from a small used car lot so I don't have the maintenance history.

Runs very well. I would like to do a good cooling system service on it (stat, hoses, clamps and probably waterpump once I determine if the timing belt has been changed or not).

Currently it runs great with no known issues (cooling system or otherwise). It has green in it now and the owners manuals says something generic about anti-freeze (I forget what it says but it is something generic like 'use quality antifreeze'). No reference to any specs.

What is the best choice. Block and heads are aluminumm and the radiator is aluminum with plastic tanks. I was thinking of going with either Fleetrite Green (50/50 blend with distilled water) or Valvoline G05 (50/50 blend) after a good flush with some radiator flush and a lot of clean water (filtered through a deionizer).

What's the verdict? Green, G05 or ???

Thanks.

Call an Isuzu dealer and see what they use. I'd also ask the same question on an ISuzu forum from knowledgeable owners.

I have an 02 Isuzu Axiom. I've been using low silicate regular green coolant in it. That's what my Isuzu dealer had used also.
No problems with cooling system at all.

I use NAPA's house brand, but that's all I could find.

PS Isuzu have interference engines, if the timing belt has not been changed, now is the time to do, along with a water pump.
Severe services interval is 75K, regular 100K.

If you are looking for traditional Green, Peak makes it and with some luck you could find it at Advance in a blue jug similar to the LL. Also, AZ sells the tradional green under their own name.

As said, Napa may also carry it.

It comes in full strength, which is good, just add distilled water.

I take it you don't want to go with an OEM brand coolant. If the Isuzu factory-fill was silicated or you don't mind suing silcated coolant then then you could run American green, Zerex green would be my choice, or G-05. It's just a matter of whether you mind changing your coolant more often.

If you don't want silciates you might go with Peak Global or any Asian formula.

An '01 Isuzu might be FF with Dexcool regardless of the color since they were affiliated with GM. You could still use Green or G-05. Probably green is the safest bet to protect your gaskets being it's an IAT.

If you're not going to get the OEM coolant it always comes down to a choice of Green, G-05, and Peak Global and Adian Formula.

asian Formula probably is the most universally compatible OEM extended life coolant. Too bad it's not really available in concentrate.
