I changed the oil in the gf's mothers car tonight. This makes her brother (previous post) and mom's OCI with 11K on Castrol gtx and a proselect filter. There was a nasty divorce so the maintenance on their vehicles suffered since hes in the picture anymore. I'm trying to promote better vehicle maintenance and show them the difference and whats wrong.

Here are pics of another filter. While I haven't dissected it yet but if you look at the nitrile ADBV, it is not seated correctly is is fluted/wavy all the way around. Her car is now also on my OCI schedule. Like I said in the last post, these are good filters but not for extended OCIs. I refilled it with some leftovers 2.5qts VNG 5w20 and 2 qts M1 HM 5w20 with a puro classic and set the OCI at 3K. What came out was not pretty but seem ok and the dipstick was varnished pretty bad but was clean-ish. Enjoy the pics.

Its still not where it should be and is compromised. Thats a failure regardless of reason.

Looks like this is the last time I'll be posting photos or a UOA on this site. Such a shame.

Where in my OP did I say this was the filters fault? Please show me.

Please tell me how this was not a failure? Do we need to define the definition of a failure?

Was this filter run longer than it should have? Probably but many shops are using this filter on vehicles that spec OCIs of 10K, not much difference than this 11K run. Was this the filters fault, no but that doesn't dismiss the failure of the filter. Bottom line is don't use a cheap filter for a long OCI.

If these shops are using filters that are not designed for long drains then they are opening themselves up for trouble. Napa will tell you that the Gold and Platinum are what they recommend for longer OCI's. I believe people are thinking that you are saying that it is a design flaw and not the owners fault. Because any filter with a nitrile valve would've been that way, as I'm sure you know that. People just look to much into word usage and look for an argument.

Yeah, don't use a cheap filter for long OCI.

The filter failed but it was not a failure. 11K is a long time and beyond what that oil and filter should have been used for... it is kinda like having a 2 tonne jack-stand being used for 4-5 tonne vehicle. Of course it is likely to fail but did the part fail or did the user (not you, the GF's mother) fail?

On the other hand, should a P1 filter fail at 4.5K... no.

Thanks for taking the time to document this and posting. Information like this can only be gained through real world experience, and it's important to those of us who care about these things.

Thanks again. With my wife's Focus OCI around 10K I am happy that I used a NAPA Gold filter.
Normally I use motorcraft's but the AZ I bought the oil from was sold out of the appropriate motorcraft. I did not want to go to Walmart to buy one. Oreilly's charges over 6 bucks for a motorcraft oil filter here after taxes. So I just went to the local NAPA.

Food for thought... here are other filters with a nitrile ADBV with higher mileage and the ADBVs did not do what this one did. Not the same filters but a nitrile ADBV none-the-less.

So the question is why did this ADBV have this happen and the other not? Does Purolator use a different formula for their nitrile ADBV?

The filter failed but it was not a failure.

Now that's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one.

ADBV are suppose to be smooth and seated to make a seal. This one is not even or smooth and is fluted, therefore not doing its job as a ADBV.

I'm aware of how an ADBV works, but I can't tell from your pics whether it is fluted and not sealing. How are others seeing what you're claiming in the pics?

I can't see much of the ADBV though the holes in the baseplate in these pics.

Look right past the threads on the inside of the filter. Those aren't drops of oil but rather the wave from the ADBV.
