(Another) mixing synthetic oil question.

I have a few quarts of Valvoline full synthetic PAO (SH rated) that I'd like to use in my GM this summer. I hesitate to use it 'full strength' because it is a rather thick 11.8 cst at 100C. (also because I don't have enough to do 2 full changes). Does anybody think I would have a problem using 3 qts. of the Valvoline with 1.5 qts Mobil 1 (or maybe with 1.5 qts. 5w20 conventional inorder to thin it out a bit). Does anybody know who made the additive package on these original Valvoline synthetic PAO's?

Your cSt number is still in the 0w30 & 5w30 range. What GM models calls for thinner 5W-20 .... I don''t know of any????

Yes you can use that Valvoline synthetic. But I would mix it 50-50 with some SM Valvoline conventional and/or Durablend. Keep your mixing in the same Valvoline house for piece of mind. Eventually, you will use all the old stock & have a nice syn-blend for your GM.

No problem! Gasoline-engine dino & synthetic oils are compatible with each other. You can safely add your SH-rated Valvoline syn to Mobil 1 in whatever ratio you like. Mobil 1 is the better oil, of course, so you might go with, say, 3 quarte of Mobil 1 5w30 to 1.5 quarts of Valvoline.

just like the question, "what's the best oil", I'd think to say that comments like "M1's better" is given as opinion. Just by the "SH" rating alone, it would probably fall short of any current "SM" rated oil, but that to is just an opinion.

What works best in your engine in it's state of tune for whatever servuce that might come along it's way over the OCI,

. used oil analysis may be the best thing going, though it only shows how things faired over the previous OCI, with such and such an oil used with this fuel, having to operate that way...

The problem that "may" occur with adding M-1 to Valvoline is shortening the life expectancy of the add-pack & base oil. You will have two different add-pack/base oils with different components. When you place either half (oil) with the other half.... you are thinning-out that add-pack/oil base. The result could be shortened oil protection life. Stay "in-house" whenever possible. Since you haven't purchased that other "half" yet.... buy a Valvoline product to match.

When would you use a thicker 30 other than summer. I'd just add it to all climate valvoline 5-30 SM for a blend and use it 5K. Should work in any GM including the 3.8 spec'd 10-30.

i understood the additive pack in SH oils of this grade were higher than later SJ and SL oils. who conned me???

I think I have to agree with 777 with regards to mixing different brands even if the additives don't clash. As far as it being SH-I've had it for awhile (that's the problem with hoarding oil,which I used to do). As far as Mobil 1 being better than this itineration of Valvoline synthetic-I wouldn't be too sure of that since this is also a PAO and contains .12 of zinc and .11 of phosphorous and has a 450*F flash point and was used by Bobby Unser in the Indy 500 and Mark Martin in Nascar and Bobby Rahal in CART/IndyCar. (even though this is true I'm joking of course-I'm just reading it from the Product Info sheet.) It also contains no VI improvers. I would bet it's a pretty good oil.

I was hoping one of our resident Valvoline experts (did somebody say TallPaul) would know who made the additive package so that I might know what it's compatible with.
