I just can’t resist. Made a bid at an auction near dc. My bid was below reserve, but I guess it was accepted after all. Within a day it was delivered to me.

This thing looks like a gem, when the thick coat of dust gets washed off. Very straight body, no blemishes, no rust that I can see. Good original paint. Nice interior. No dash cracks. Unfortunately it was converted to r-134a, and the compressor isn’t coming on, but I suspect the car has sat a few years. I’ll vacuum it then test it with hydrocarbon refrigerant at some point.

I know the belt tensioner shock needs to be replaced, but it seems good otherwise. Only 206k miles. 1991 350SD.

Started right up.

Subscribed: I love the Euro cars but I can’t make myself commit. I see a diamond under all the grime. (y)

Great purchase. This one will be a collectible, a rolling testament to the time when German engineering - in the spare-no-expense sense - was some of the best in the world. No person who will look at Germany in 2030 will ever have believed the country at one time produced such an automotive gem.
And I have two of these now, in nearly the same color scheme. Twins!

Nice! With a little care that car will run forever.

OT-Wasn't that garage in the background a painting project in the not so distant past? From what I can see that came out nice too!

Snatch them up while you can. The world's gone crazy and the attributes that gave us the milk and honey are being stifled quickly.

Nice find I really like that body style. The anti freeze looks nice and green as if the previous owner kept it changed on a regular basis. Better get some fuel in it the gauge is nearing empty. I love finding those cars and doing an extreme wax, wheel restoration, and engine cleanup as well as the interior.....well lets just say detail the entire car. Maybe show us a picture after it's all detailed. That baby really idles nicely.

Cleaned it up a bit, vacuumed under the hood, changed the tensioner shock, etc.

The engine must have been run a bit with the shock broken. The tensioner is done for…

It runs and drives really nicely! Very peppy, much quicker than my 1993 300SD with the same engine.

Found some records and it turns out the HG was done back in 2013 at 160k miles for about $3000 at a well known Indy shop outside Atlantic City, NJ. So there’s that history… consistent with my other 1991 350SD.

Nice and clean underneath, though there is a bit of an oil leak from somewhere….

Step #1 for me would be removing that buzzer

My '96 Jeep had one just like it, and it "disappeared" about 12-13 years ago...
