Got some strange numbers on this UOA from my J-D Diesel Gator; 24 HP Yanmar; 530 total hours; 100 hrs/1 year +/- on the CI-4+ RTS 5-40 oil; NAPA 1365 filter. Iron and silicon were both high, according to Blackstone. Really strange part is the last UOA on another 24 HP Yanmar in my X595 here http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1208985#Post1208985 also showed high silicon numbers. A dust infiltration problem at the RWEST compound?

One thing that may have impacted the numbers - I didn't get the sample mid-flow; the sample bottle rolled away, and while I was chasing it, most of the oil drained out - I just caught the very end of the drain. Could that have done it?

RON: The universal averages column shows typical wear from this type of engine after about 90 hours on the oil (I've shown UA's in red ). This oil was run 100 hours, so we can understand wear being a little higher than average, though chrome and iron are somewhat higher than they should be. The reason may be silicon, if the silicon is dirt.
Suggest checking out the air filtration system and changing the air filter if necessary. Hopefully fixing an issue there will clear up the high metals next time around. The TBN read 10.0, still a very strong reading.

I used RTS 5-40 again for the re-fill, with NAPA 1365 filter.

I'm curious about some of those numbers, especially the silicon. This is two UOA's in a row with high silicon numbers.

I have a John Deere X-595 Diesel, also! I change the oil every 60 Hrs, which for my use is every October!....I use MotorCraft SuperDuty 5w-40 Diesel Oil.....

iron, alum. and chromium wear #s indicate some dust injestion caused wear on cyl. walls, rings and pistons.

tractors run in a far dustier environment than a passenger car on the freeway.

what type of work done with tractor, rototilling, dirt moving, discing?

what brand of air filter in use now?

test the air intake system with a spray can of carb cleaner for leaks.

change to a Donaldson Extended Service or Cummins StrataPore

most of the import diesel tractors have too small an air filter for America's dusty conditions. may need to upsize the filter housing and filter to put on an effective StrataPore, Extended Service Don.

also add 3% B100 biodiesel to your ULSD to reduce engine wear added lubricity. old Yanmars were not designed for ULSD

If you're referring to the Gator, it's a utility vehicle, used mostly for just running around the property - mostly paved, some dirt. The X595 is used stricly for mowing my lawn. Even that isn't overly dusty, with all the rain we've had this year.

Air filters are factory John Deere. The Gator's, as far as I know, is the original - I've never changed it. It WILL be, and I'll go over everything else in there.

Thanks for the input.

I agree look for leaks - the UOA for this type of engine at its age is not really that bad. Also have you seen many Redline VOA's - they seem to have counts to begin with. By the time you hit 3000 hours you will see, it will break in and clean up.
