I vote for a 74 Volvo. They were among the first to use Bosch Fuel injection with o2 sensors ("Lambda Sond".) Their model lines span decades. I daily drove a 91 940 turbo wagon back in 2011-2012 with two toddler kids. Only thing that left me stranded (in my own driveway) was a fuel pump relay that I was able to pry apart, shim operational with a matchbook, then resolder when convenient.

Volvos handle decently and run cheap tires etc and have that hipster vibe.

The only thing is they drink gas like a crown vic but aren't as fast.

I'd pick a different state in which to live and my modification would be to move there.

There's no way I'd ever live under the draconian thumb of the socialist state of California.

I always love the range of old vehicles I see when in CA. And so many look like new, perhaps it is because of body work, but I guess plenty of places have decent but not overly sunny climate.

When I wanted a like new diesel coupe, I went to CA to buy one and drove it home.

It's common to see people come here to California to buy their dream vehicle. If you can't find it here, maybe it does not exist.

I'm still driving my 84 Civic wagon that I purchased new and I have no plans of ever selling it. There's nothing wrong with it and it's paid for.

Anybody mention the 1981-1991 W126 Mercedes, coupe or sedan? The sedan several V-8s and a diesel in short- or long-wheelbase, and the coupe offered 2 V-8s in America (and, I think, a third one overseas, the 420SEC). Gas guzzlers by today's standards, yes, but grand rides.

The diesels never die. It's not because they don't fail - its just that people don't junk them, they keep repairing them and driving them. Mercedes are funny cars.

I did it for years, I'd shoot for an 80's Mercedes, because in good tune you won't feel like your driving a very classic car.

A well tuned W126 is at least as good of a driving car as a late model plastic something or other.

W126, W123, R107, or W124 are the models to get. A 1995 E300D would be a very nice ride.

Since your in CA an R107 or R129 would make a great daily ride, and with values on the upswing you won't have to eat much if any more depreciation.
