Hi,

I am looking for a good ATF to use in a Dex III application: a chevy truck.

Why wouldnt I want ATD over ATF??? ATD meets dexron specs and seems to be heavier duty...

This is important for many reasons: first, SF no longer makes ATF, and second, Amsoil ATF meets MB, chrysler ATF+4 and toyota specs, so we could potentially have a universal fluid around the house.

Also, For diff fluid, SVG is suggested for cars and trucks.. why wouldnt I want FGR in my diff, since its a long life fluid, and rated for HD trucks (so it must be designed for severe duty)? Does they both , in your exprience, have sufficient LSD additive out of the bottle?

Sorry, I think Im going to buy more SF diff fluid when I need some, but Ive heard good things about amsoil diff oil... some prefer it over even redline... so Id like to be knowledgable.

Thanks,

JMH

I would personally use the Universal ATF for the transmission. What would be your types of driving conditions would you be doing, such as towing/hauling? Towing and hauling would be the only reason I would suggests the ATD. I enjoy the ATF, shifts are much smoother than petroleum atf.

I have no experience with those two types of differential fluid, I have used the 80w-90 AGL and it has worked well. The FGR is only a long life (500,000 miles) for over-the-road trucks, it's still recommended for 100,000 miles in personal vehicles, as is the SVG. For LSD compatibility, I have heard that the SVG usually does better than the FGR, but any chattering could happen with both, which then you would want to use your manufacturer's LSD additive. There's only about a $2 cost difference between those two per quart, so if you have no problem with that, then I'd suggests getting the SVG.

didnt look it up - I take it the SVG is $2 more then???

As far as ATD vs ATF... I would be off roading, which can be strenuous... but not as bad as towing I guess.

I do haul stuff, but its mainly bulky stuff, not that heavy.. but sometimes I do haul a LOT of concrete blocks. All the same, ATF is surely the best choice for me.

thanks,

JMH

The FGR retails for $8.45 and the SVG retails for $10.30.

As for the ATF, I see that both are recommended for at least the 2000-2004 (probably more) models. That choice would be up to you, both have similar specs, with minor differences. The ATF has a recommended service life, where as the ATD suggests oil analysis to lengthen service intervals.

I would stick with the ATF. I'm sure the ATD would work fine, but I have no backing info/data that ATD would actually protect better. OTOH, the ATF has racked up many miles on many cars with no complaints. I have seen GM trailer haulers go from AT cookers that would oxidize dino ATF in short order to, long lasting, cooler running AT's on Amsoil ATF.

The SVG does have a higher amount of EP and AW additives than the FGR. It really depends on the type of LSD as to which one works better. I think, but I'm not sure that the two gear oils use different base oils.

I have been using AMSOIL ATF for over 22,000 miles in my 99 Grand Prix. I've noticed better cold weather shifting with the Amsoil ATF vs. the original Dexron III.
ATD is primarily a Transynd replacement for Allison transmissions. (Although, you can use Dexron III in Allison transmissions, but with shortened drain intervals.)

Even though ATF and ATD have the same viscosities, they differ in their additive packages, according to the Amsoil tech support people.
Stick with ATF.
