Hello all,
I just did my yearly UOA and received some surprisingly poor results from Amsoil SS 5w20 oil with only 7,622 miles on it. The oil was ran in a 2015 Ford F150 with the 5.0. My driving habits are 80% highway, 20% city, and low yearly mileage, but my average trip is around 20 miles one way. Any idea what would cause such a poor oxidation value? Appreciate the help.

Do you know the VOA ox value? Because unless you know what it started at, you have zero idea how much change occurred.

The wear metals are decent; Fe is 3.5 ppm/1k mi and the others are so low as to be considered noise.
The contamination (Fuel, Si, soot) are all very low.

I'd say there's nothing wrong here at all.

I do not know the VOA oxidation value. The lab asked for the oil used because they didn’t see my note about it. I plan to call them tomorrow so they can update the report. Hopefully that’s all it is.

Now that we've established the oxidation value is basically where it starts out at, I believe the overall results are just fine for a year. There was still enough TBN remaining to show the oil made it safely with room to spare. Operating viscosity is also right on where it starts out. Nice report!

Looks good IMO.

Based on 100*C viscosity and the fact that there’s ~2% fuel based on GC, I’d say there’s evidence of some thickening, but not much. Definitely nothing worth being excited over. Other than TBN being 2.45, there’s nothing here that would preclude going 10k, and since TBN is not depleted linearly there’s even the possibility it may only drop to say 2.0 at that point… we simply don’t know with the available data.

Nothing wrong at all with this sample OP! 👍🏻

Amsoil is pretty resistant to viscosity loss. This grade in particular lost only 2.6% in a double Kurt Orbahn shear test. The oxidation value is hasn't changed either. Acid number would be good to see here.

If this oil had HPL level of Mg the TBN would likely be double of what it is I'm guessing.

Yes, TBN here is the only thing stopping the OP from doubling his OCI imo. You’d have to worry about corrosion potential long before any of the other indications seem to say the oil would be due for a change.

Amsoil are you listening?? 😎

I've been using Amsoil SS for 9 1/2 yrs in my 2011 Expedition 5.4L 3v, It's Spec'd for 5w-20.
Approx 4 1/2 yrs ago I switched from 5w-20 to 5w-30.
That was 140k miles ago. My Expedition currently has 391k miles.(In my Signature)
imho I would switch to Amsoil SS 5w-30, and do another oci in 10k miles.
Thanks for Posting, and Good Luck!

I have another OCI worth of SS 5w20, but my plan is to switch to SS 5w30. Consuming about a quart every 7,000 miles so that will hopefully help.

The is somewhat of a laboratory problem. New SS 5w-20's been tested & they should know that it has higher oxidation value but they flag it anyways. There is nothing wrong w/your oxidation as others have pointed out. If you plan on doing a lot of testing w/a particular oil then it's best to get the brand new oil tested as a baseline.
27 iron.
Everyone ^^^^^ seems fine with it.
Ideally this vehicle should have a 5w-30 minimum. Chasing CAFE numbers.
