Oil guru's, I know some people "shutter" at the thought of running anything less than a XW40 oil in their diesel engine, but whatabout this oil in a Duramax? Anyone on here with opinions based on experience with this oil please fill me in. I am mainly interested in this oil due to the fuel economy potential with the 30 vs 40 weight. I shall also mention that my duramax is modified with a computer tuner, not sure if this would still be a good choice or not? Looking at amsoil's specs I see a big difference in the HT/HS numbers between this oil vs the 40 weights which to me sounds alarming, but I was told that you cannot judge an oil by it's spec's,but rather how it performs in your application.

You'll be fine running HDD in your Duramax. I know of a guy on another forum running it in his Dodge Cummins for about two years now, and it always comes back good.

I've successfully run conventional 10w30 HDEO with no issues. In fact, the used oil analysis (even with heavy and hot towing) have come back fine.
The Dmax is very easy on oil. As long as you use a quality brand name oil in the spec'd grade, you'll be fine.

There are lots of good Xw30 HDEOs out there - Rotella T5 10w30 is one that was obscenely cheap the last time I dared set foot in a Walmart... $15/gallon, IIRC. I used 0w30 (Elf Evolution CRV) and 5w30 (Castrol SLX Longlife 3) oils in my own Golf for several 10k mile OCIs.
It all depends on the application - I want 5w40s in both my cars. Dirtymaxes are so easy on oil there's probably no reason to not try a HDEO Xw30.

I wouldn't. The 3.5 HTHS viscosity is not very good--great for a 5w30, poor for a diesel. The minimum HTHS viscosity recommended the DMax is 3.7.
In any case, how much fuel will be saved with the lighter oil? 1%? 2%? Too low to count. It makes a difference for a country, not enough difference for an individual.

Thanks for the input. I found out that the Amsoil 10w30 ACD HTHS is 3.5 as well. I dumped it, since it was time to change anyway, and poured in 10 fresh quarts of Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck that I got from O'Reileys at $19.99/gallon. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck is HTHS is 3.8! Duramax purs nicely on the Mobil 1!

I've been using it for 5 years and 45K miles. I have never had a bad UOA, wear metals are consistently below minimum flagging threshold (iron at 20ppm or below after 21K miles, aluminum between 4 ppm during break-in and 1 ppm afterwards)), soot volume below minimum level (

However, in extremely warm climates, one may want to use Amsoil SAE 15w40 Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil, if the thought of 5w30 oil is a concern, and it is $2.00 per quart cheaper. Do not use these oils in any engine that requires API CJ-4 specification.

You might be able to run a thinner oil without significant wear problems.
But note that oil-film thickness directly correlates with HTHS viscosity. And less the viscosity-index improvers (VIIs), thinner the oil film for the same HTHS viscosity. Chances are that AMSOIL is a PAO-based oil and it has little VIIs and given that it's also an xW-30-weight oil, it would have a very thin oil film, which might result in pronounced bearing wear. Therefore, you would probably experience less wear with a dino xW-30 oil, assuming that you change it as recommended.
