Good Afternoon Folks,

I've attached the Used Oil Report from Blackstone Labs.

1st report on the bike, low miles on the bike only 5,084, oil was in service for 17 months.

Oil filter was HiFlo Filtro.

Great bike, fun to ride.

What do you thin?

Metals are high for the mileage but it would probably avg out better if you put more miles on this bike. Do you plan to do more miles on this one per sample test or keep it each 1k?

Kind of hard to read but it looks like it sheared to a 40 grade. That shouldn’t happen after only 1K miles.

Looks good to me. Copper seems a tad high, but I’m unsure if that is typical of bikes.
I believe the engine is still breaking in.

I posted my Road King Oil Analysis on a follow up post (take a look at that), same 103 engine, and the Road King with mileage on the bike of 6,880, UOA on copper was 33 after 2,870 miles of in service using Valvoline.

If I pro-rate the Street Bob copper to the same mileage, copper would be 46, so it is little higher using Amsoil.

Total wear metals pro-rated to the same mileage was:

1. Amsoil - 77
2. Valvoline - 49

Not certain if this is a right way to look at it, but it would appear to me that Valvoline’s Motorcycle Syn 20w-50 did a better job than Amsoil.

The only reason I changed it out at 1,000 miles was the time oil was in service, 17 months.

We are told to change out 12 months, not certain if that really needs to be followed after seeing this report at 17months.

Viscosity was 15.65 at 100c, still in grade, but barely.

A 50 grade should be 16.30-21.89, so yours has sheared to the upper range of a 40 grade.

I see you also posted a UOA for your 2014 RK. That shows a viscosity of 19.0 so it stayed in grade. Not sure why the Street Bob is shearing more since they both have the same 103 motor. Also, the zinc & phosphorus numbers are higher on the RK UOA than on Street Bob. I don’t know if that’s within the same acceptable margin/range or if the Street Bob is still breaking in and is using up those elements. I’m assuming you bought the oil for both bikes at the same time, so they should be from the same batch.

Oil bought at the same time. Thanks again for the chart, I printed it out for my files, and your right, the S-Bob sheared under 50 wt. (n)

Evo, what oil do you use in your Harley?

Why assume it's the oil with a single UOA from Blackstone? They are notoriously odd and inaccurate. Amsoil 20W-50 is not known to shear and your other bike with a 3X+ run didn't shear at all on the exact same down to the same batch. Same engine. Does not that seem odd?

Ask them to run the viscosity again if they have a retain left, or better do another run, but use another lab.

Hi Pablo,

I hear you and you make a good point. (y) I like Amsoil products, refilled the Street Bob with Amsoil Engine oil and Primary & Transmission oils.

I will say that my Road King saw some high temperatures as my Temperature Management System came on many many times during the summer when riding on the streets, it turns on when the back “jug” temperature reaches 275 degrees, it then stops firing and reactivates when I roll on the throttle.

So, I am very pleased with my Road King report! :)

By the way, how does one order Amsoil products from you? The last batch I just went to my local Harley Dealer, they carry Amsoil, but with dealer pricing (which means they don’t put the price on the products, you find out the price when you check out).

No disrespect to the Amsoil line. :)

I have 2 Harleys. An ‘89 Electra Glide and a 2018 Tri Glide. I just had a bunch of work done by my local Indy on the EG: New inner cam bearing, new lifters, new carb, new tires front and rear. They changed all the fluids and put a straight 50 grade dino in the engine. Harley says it’s OK to use a straight weight above 60*F. I’m in Florida, so that should be OK for another month or so. When I change it, I will put in some Castrol Power1 V-Twin 20W-50. Here’s a recent UOA from a guy’s Twin Cam:

I’m currently running Mobil 1 15W-50 in my Tri Glide. It’s got a 107 M8 motor. Here’s a UOA from a guy with a 2017 with a 107 M8 motor:

I think @Pablo might be on to something. Maybe Blackstone could test it again. If not, maybe use Oil Analyzers for both samples next time.

The Castrol UOA was fantastic, I saw that a few months ago, and printed it out. In my Road King, I put M1 Motorcycle 20w-50 in the engine, and Amsoil’s Primary oil and Transmission oil in their respective holes.

In the Street Bob, Amsoil in the engine and Amsoil’s Primary and Transmission oils in their respective holes.

I am going to use Oil Analyzers next time on both.

Regarding the Trikes, I think they are great looking bikes, when I had my hip replaced 2 years ago that was going to be my option if I felt uncomfortable on my bikes, but that was not the case. I was back riding in 90 days after surgery, no issues.

Thanks for posting the report.
I got a chance to ride a Street Bob 114 during our local Harley dealer demo day event a few months ago.
Holy cow that bike was a blast , I liked it more than the Lowrider ST with the 117.

The Street Bobs are just great looking bikes.

No disrespect taken. Just normal UOA banter. In fact I kind of missed this one, until someone contacted me to comment here.

The other thing I will add - is about copper. People call copper a wear metal, or wear. It CAN be, but it is often not. It often, especially when synthetic oils are involved, is chelated (held on to) by the oil (typically esters), and can come from just exposed copper and copper alloys (brass and bronze) in an engine . I see it mentioned in the 2017 Mobil1 analysis as well.

For purchasing Amsoil a decent price: https://www.amsoil.com/offers/pc/?zo=515729

What does the bike spec? I'm about to change the oil on my BMW F750 GS which specs 5W-40, which seems a bit thin for hot Houston weather, but I don't want to really veer off the BMW spec for no reason
