On another forum I frequent, there is an oil section, and one of the posters there wrote the quote below. I invite those who know a lot about these oils to comment.

quote:

In basics, there are two components that are used in the manufacturer of todays motor oils. There is the basestock and there is the additive package. It is the balance between the two that makes an oil good or great. Amsoil uses a PAO basestock made by, guess who, Mobil. Their add packs come from Lubrizol. Amsoil is a blender not a manufacturer of motor oils. They do not have any refineries making product from crude oil. Their PAO basestocked oils are not API certified because the add packs exceed API limits. The primary reason is because of the levels of Zinc and Phos used in their formulations. These anti-wear agents are suspected of being harmful to your emmissions system. In the non-scientific testing I have seen, the Mobil One will out distance the Amsoil. If I had to guess I would probably say it is due to the inclusion of Mobils Super Syn. Amsoil will be higher in cost due to the MLM marketing where many hands are in the pot seeking profit. If you have the need for a synthetic, Mobil One is a good one.

Is it true that Amsoil is purely a blender, buying basestock PAO from Mobil and additive packages from Lubrizol? And is Super Syn (whatever it is) really superior to Amsoil's add-pack?

I think in a sense all companies are blenders and buy add pacs from Lubrizol, etc. I really don't see Mobil 1 outperforming Amsoil

My amsoil dealer told me that mobil got thier base stock from amsoil. Who knows. Maybe thay both buy it from someone else

No edit

Amsoil's "brew" is better, I feel, because more of their oils are ACEA A3 and MB 229.3 or 229.5 rated than Mobil 1's. Amsoil's product data sheets also disclose much more information than anybody elses, which is important to me. Both make excellent products and should be bought primarily based on price.

Doesn't it all come from the Black Forest in Germany?

The only thing Mobil gets from Amsoil is a check.

Another Amsoil Dealer spreading falsehoods. Maybe Royal Purple oil is really made by Amsoil and RP just adds the purple dye which is the moly, and get RP.

As the big oil companies make better and better products, I think the market will get even tougher for Redline, RP, and Amsoil.

The difference between the mainstream and the specialists is narrowing.

Better base stocks and premium additves packages at more robust levels seems to be their only hope.

Wrong Amsoil does not Make any PAO's or GPI,II,III base stocks they buy them.

I want to reply to this but don't know where to start.

How about Amsoil rep's that don't know the product they are selling? "Know your product, know your competition" doesn't seem to hold any water with most Amsoil salesmen. Except, again, for BITOG'ers.

Amsoil, like Redline and others, is a blender. They don't manufacture, invent, create or develop new technologies. They buy from various suppliers such as ExxonMobil, Ethyl, Lubrizol etc. and make their oils. Mobil 1 is made "in house" using only XOM additives and basestocks. A reason why Mobil 1 is as good and readily available as it is.

I had a Mobil guy on the phone a year or two ago tell he can't criticize Amsoil all that much bc they sell them their basestocks and additives. I think the comment about the smaller differences between the majors and blenders is true.

I'm just glad BITOG exists as an alternative source to Amsoil Dealer propaganda. BITOG has always been great in that it cuts through this garbage.

There is one rumor that RP buys ELF for its formulations, but hey they could buy from more than one source too. Also I have not seen yet anyone post the "street" story on the background of RP and where they started.

I would think that all the small specialist companies have to buy from more than one supplier.

If not they would be at the mercy of whichever big company supplied them for price and volume.

I think that has been mentioned in the past as one reason that formulation may change slightly.

I wouldn't be surprised if even the big companies bought from each other.

Amsoil does NOT get ALL their basestocks from Mobil.

Castrol is a blender - big whoop.

I think you guys need to read Lubes and Greases magazine. And I think you should check the prices.

I really am starting to doubt these "Amsoil dealer said" statements. I think some posters just make them up. NO dealer would have said that.

Here is my 2 cents. Amsoil is a smaller company that makes a great product. But it has to compete with other company's. It does not have the market of a oil company of exxon/mobil. Are the bennies offset by the price? It depends on the consumer. Are there bad salesman out there? Sure they have to make money somehow. The question is this all worth it to you. Also I also agree the big companies products are getting better and better maybe due to competion from companies like amsoil.

Pablo trust me they do exist. Your very quick to defend them, which i can understand bc you sell Amsoil, but I've come across a guy that makes a lot of things up.

dave makes an excellent point. Amsoil does make the competition better. Amsoil isn't the only company also that does things like this.

I'm not defending unethical people. I'm just saying it's pretty easy for folks just to type in:

"An Amsoil dealer said my nads are blue"

Next time you hear something like this, get a name and or a dealer number!!! Even if you don't want to challenge him on the spot I'm sure he'd happily give you his name and number!

Hey, I like that. Will have to make a mental note for the day when all the other oils wimp out of zddp.

TxGreaseMonkey, their PDS contains much more data, as it can say "meets or exceeds", as opposed to "tested to standard XYZ".

That being said, with a car out of warranty, and less than $17(OZ)per quart (I pick up, when M1 0W-40 is $13, delvac 1 is $11.20)...I'd happily use their oils.
