Hi all long time I have not been here. Now I have Nissan Titan XD for several years.
So what I wanted to talk about is this 5.0 Cummins engine oils. I used Valvoline oil as it was recommended and my engine gone in Michigan on one of my trips in summer time. When I checked oil it was about little more than half but 1,000 plus before it was a full mark. So Nissan replaced engines as they told spun bearing on Crankshaft.
They put same Valvoline oil so achexk oil after 1500 miles and it was about half !!!! That is made me to go ahead sign up with Amosoil so now after 3 oil changes and 25,000 miles I noticed one most important factors
1. Oil level stay a full for all 8,000 miles
2. Never added oil while use Amsoil
But it's not cheap I do 2.5 gallons gar plus 2.3 qt. So total oil price about 130 dollars
I did oil changes a just week ago and sent for the analysis. I will post the results here soon as available and you are specialists can tell me if good for 8,000 miles and can it go 10,000 miles
I don't see reason to waste a good working oil just because 8,000 miles recommended.

Thanks

So you found out Valvoline was burning off before & after the engine was replaced? Adding oil should be a common practice and to make sure it never falls below the minimum line. Are you saying the oil was below the minimum line after 1500 miles?

It was just below half, even it was serviced by dealership after engine replacement. I checked it as well before living Michigan to VA. I trusted this dealership in Saginaw, as I had experience best treatment from service manager and guy whom worked on engine replacement. That is not because of discounts on work, just updates and details thru went thru during this process.

Yes it was burning oil, but that last trip on old engine was killer for that engine with 87 K. Oil is just gone, I was shocked, when I heard knocking sound and then check oil level, I can't believe my eyes. That is why I did checked oil on "new" (10K) engine after 1500 miles. Something is not right Valvoline and Cummins 5.0. May be that engine is working at much higher temps than RAM engine, as turbo sits behind an engine at firewall. Not sure what is an issue. There is some failed engines on Cummins 5.0.

Still not fully understanding. "It was just below half" meaning halfway above the minimum line?

yes above min level, on my old engine, and new engine after 1500 miles was about half mark on dipstick

So half means halfway between MIN and MAX on dipstick in 1500 miles?

Some engines that is about a quart, but on big sump diesels that may be 2 quarts, so you were a quart low in 1500 miles?

The cummins 5.0 is known to have a weak bottom end.

10 quarts with filter-
Min/Full represents 1 or 2 quarts. Lets say its 1.5 quarts. That would mean it burned just 0.75 quart in 1500 miles. So it would take 3,000 miles to burn a quart of oil. That's not bad at all for a diesel engine. My 6.0L international burns 1 quart every 2750 miles as an example.

Either way, I just want to think how is it that this 2nd motor is an oil hog on Valvoline & Amsoil is the miracle cure... I understand Amsoil does advertise lower burn off & perhaps it is really that much better...

Too much fuel in the system!!! strange engine working very nice, maybe it cause by Hot shot? or bad winter fuel. I need to change a fuel station. Blow-by?
I think that is problem of these engines, as people add more power = more fuel, that is leading even more fuel in the crackshaft

It now makes sense. You said the amsoil is showing "NO USE OVER 8K MILES" on your dipstick. However, it appears that it's not from Amsoil greatness but rather It looks like the oil level didn't go down because of Fuel Delusion.

That is kind strange to me as viscosity is normal. Doesn't make any sense. and 8% of 13 qts is only 1 qt. So it's not line up with fuel and oil level. The half dipstick would be more like 20 % of fuel or 3 qts.

I called a lab and CS said same thing no sense so they will retest this. So if it s still bad I will take another oil sample and send to lab. That would be like about 1,000 miles oil

When I look up this engine it shows 10 Quarts w/filter. Is that incorrect? Also, I doubt halfway between the min/full mark represents 3 quarts but I can learn something new if it's true.

Interesting, fuel looks similar to my last report. reasonable metals present and no significant viscosity loss (I’m not using amsoil). I’d be interested in what another lab tests come back at. GC is the gold standard for Fuel measurements so I’m not sure how they’d screw it up.

I had 10K/360+ hours on my fill. I ended up changing the oil.

Do you have similar engine ? Or you do think that is just a typical wear with diesels and fuel like winter diesel.

I put 2.5 gallons and add 2.3 qts . That is making a full. Maybe filter variations
