I've been lurking around here for awhile and am amazed at what some of you know about motor oil.Alot of it is way over my head but here is a simple question that I hope to get some advise on.I've been using Amsoil 5w30 in my 98 Honda Civic for over a year now.Initially,I changed the filter and topped off at 6k and then did a complete change again at 12k.Now that I'm into my 2nd full change of Amsoil.I'm thinking of following the manufacurers guidlines and running it the full 24k with the filter changes and top off every 6k.As a former and very strict, change every 3k,dino oil user,I'm a little hesitant to leave something in my crankcase for 24k.Any thoughts?

How many miles on the car?

How long on dino before?

Did you do an AutoRx clean?

Go 20K and do a UOA using your methodolgy would be my general answer IF your engine is clean inside.

There was about 88k on the Civic when I switched to Amsoil. There is just under 102k on the car now.I've had the valve cover off and the engine looks pretty clean. What is an auto rx clean?

Go to the main page and look under site sponsors. You will see Auto RX and that will lead you to their website. They make a great product for cleaning engines, transmissions, etc. Most on this site that have used it have had excellent results.

I would for sure do the AutoRx. After you could go 15-20-25K IF a UOA proves your engine is sweet - butt and it's a HUGE BUTT - don't go beyond 1 year - how much do you drive in one year?

Let me back up for a minute here. When I switched from dino to Amsoil,I used that Amsoil engine flush(I think it's called)prior to filling with Amsoil.I would guess I put between 18 and 22k on the Civic every year.

While the Amsoil flush is better than nothing - it really does help drain out and indeed flush the old oil out - it's not much of a cleaner.

20K or so should be safe within the 1 year limit.

I still highly recommend the AutoRx and a UOA. But since you have the oil aleady in - the choice is yours - just leave it until 20K and take a sample and dump - or sample earlier via the dipstick.

I guess you like a sludged up engine.

I think that AMSOIL makes one of the finest products in the world I just dont like some of the marketing hype and some of the dealers. But Pablo seems to be one a the honest and knowlegable ones. And I beleave that it might make it to 24k only an UOA's could point you to the right direction. As for the sludged engine part some engines can not do a 10k OCI no matter what product is used. But I would have to see proof that AMSOIL on an extended drain with an UOA's to establish the proper OCI sludged in engine.

This is my second Honda Civic. The first one went well over 200k on dino oil so,I've asked myself,"What am I trying to accomplish by using Amsoil?"I still haven't answered that but,I do enjoy not having to change oil every 3k.What is the procedure for a UOA?Thanks to all for your advise.
