i was thinking of putting the full synthetic 15w40 in my wife's 2003 tacoma since i don't use it in my ford psd anymore (oil leak $$). i have been using amsoil 0w30. i will be taking a sample in a few thousand miles but how will the 15w-40 work? it has the 2.7 4cyl with 24k on it.
she will be towing a small (1000lb) boat up in new hampshire this summer.
thanks

If you already have it, I'd use it up othewise I'd go with a 30wt. I don't see the need for a 40wt, especially in a Tacoma. I focus on the quality of the oil, not the viscosity bc it really doesn't matter all that much for most cars.

I would stick with the 30 weight! It stays cool in NH even in the summers.

Daily Drives:
-2003 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner XtraCab, Impulse Red, Peppy 2.7 Liter 4 Banger, Running Mobil1 Synthetics SS 5W-30.
ODO 7100 Miles.
-1995 Toyota 4-Runner, Evergreen, 3.0 V6, Running Mobil1 Synthetic SS 10W-30.
ODO 83110 Miles. (Switching to GC next)Nope sticking with M1.

Go for it and don't look back! The 2.7 I4 can easily handle this viscosity, and the Amsoil, without a doubt (guess you are using the AME 15w-40?) , easily will flow well enough at low temperatures to provide the cold start-up protection you need.

Of course, it will protect the engine very well, but since it's an HDEO, it will also keep the engine super-duper clean as well!

Will it work? sure
Will it screw up an oil sample if you are simply adding to it? sure.
Will it give you better mileage or longer drain interval? Not bloody likely

Where is you psd leaking?

Here is the problem as I see it with running the 40 weight. If you have problems with the motor that requires warranty work (internal) you will be required to produce oil receipts stating the oil used and mileage interval. Since this vehicle is new and you are under the warranty you will clearly be going outside the recommended viscosity by Toyota. If you are willing to take that chance then that is your choice.
