I want to know how shear stable this oil is. I put it in my Honda 4 wheeler nearly a year ago, and while it doesnt get used but maybe 1 to 2 times a week, it does get ran real hard when it does get used. I put the 10w-40 Amsoil in about 10 mos. ago, and it still looks brand new. Perfectly amber, no black at all, just smells a bit like gas is all. The only thing I can think of that this oil might be ready to come out is if perhaps it sheared in the little 1 cylinder beast of a motor. (or maybe age). It would make me sick to drain out oil that looks like brand new just because it was 10 mos. old! It has performed well for me and I think I might try a batch in the Jeep pretty soon. This is my first amsoil experience btw.

I've never heard of oil not meeting spec if it looks exactly like it did when it came out of the bottle.

10 months is nothing for infrequently used motor oil. Age is almost completely irrelevant -- my former employer had fills of oil over 40 years old that still easily met spec and experienced little degradation. Use is what counts, and it seems that you probably have plenty of life left on your oil.

Never judge a book by it's cover. If you bought an expensive synthetic and want to run it for long oci's then a uoa is in order, alas if it only holds a quart I would dump it and just change it once a year...

I kinda agree with both previous callers.

I would just go a full 12 months and call it quits. The oil is probably just fine but if it bugs you, indeed do a UOA at the end.

Actually the 10W-40 is not an "expensive synthetic", it's just a hair more expensive than M1, but not expensive like Red Line.

Is your worry about shearing simply because of this engine? Does this engine have a history of shearing other oils? It worries me a bit that the oil smells of fuel.

You're only talking about a quart or two, right? Seems to me that the smart thing to do is to change it once a year and be done with it. If it smells like gas, I'd change it earlier since you may be getting some fuel past the rings.

Oil is pretty cheap, and it's a small investment to protect your equipment.

I have been using this same oil in my 2001 Honda Rancher 4x4 ATV. I just change it out every spring and not worry about it. I have a buddy with the similar model (Rubicon) and he been using the 20W-50 and doing the same thing. He puts on more miles than me. I do about 500 miles a year and he ran his almost 3000 this past summer but he has 80 acres and runs all over his place with it beating the crap our of it.

I guess I will cut it loose then in March/April and call it good. It hold 2.2 qts of oil. It does smell like gas, but I have never changed the oil on any gasser motor that the oil DIDN"T smell a little like gas!?!?!? Oil hasn't thinned out or anything.

I dont know how bad this engine shears oil, I just assumed a little 1 cylinder motor being ran at redline would be kinda hard on oil.
