amirror glue?

Driver mirror popped off last night. The glass bit looks more like a piece of polished metal, but is oddly shiny on both sides. Only the reflective bit came off, and I was able to grab it before it fell on the pavement. The rest of the mirror housing is fine.

Can I use anything to glue it back on, like RTV? Coworker thought there might be some sort of chemical reaction.

Again, this is the outside mirror, not the interior rearview one. I think the backing plate is plastic, not sure on the mirror itself (is at home with the car right now).

Super Glue will work, the "gap filler" kind is best. Some say it's better to have a glue with some flex in it to compensate for expansion and contraction.

I'd use JB Weld

I tried super glue a couple of times and the mirror eventually fell off again each time. Went to Pep Boys and bought what they had specifically for mirrors and it hasn't fallen off again.

I use 3M two-sided (black rubber) tape.

I would use tape, but I would like to retain the heating portion of the mirror--not sure how hot it gets when on heat.

The "gap filler" super glue works better than the standard stuff which requires very close spacing between the parts to be glued. Last time I did one in a pinch I used black Permatex windshield sealer. Still good several years later.
