I thought Ames died a long time ago. Did someone buy the rights to the name to re establish a new store? I'm surprised K Mart didn't die with Ames. It seems Target and Wal-Mart are the successors to Ames and Kmart

That site is for a shovel maker that dates back to colonial days. The stores called "Ames" were a chain that bought out G.C. Murphy (ie Murphy's Mart), Zayre, Hills, and other store chains in the 1980's and 1990's. Per Wikipedia (which has an excellent dead store archive) they closed in 2002.

Yeah, Ames stores have been gone for a while. They bought out Zayre's which was big around here in the 70's. The last few years for Ames stores in this area was not pretty. They were dumpy, filthy, and had nothing in the stores.

Shar - Sears bought and owns K-Mart now.

That's not correct. K-Mart purchased and merged with Sears in November of 2004, not vice versa.

Near the end of Ames my tv station had them on a "cash before delivery" policy. When their check cleared their spots got logged.

They pandered to a pretty simple clientele. One ad said "Take 70% off all fine jewelry, plus another 20% at the register, then 10% off that." Not free, only 78.4% off their original inflated price.

Not as bad as Bradlees (northeast only? chain) who sold gift cards all December then slammed their doors shut on 12/26.

Ames was actually a good place to get cheap oil; Sunday morning I'd be there, superflo 59 cents after rebate and they usually had a sale at least once a month.

Bottom line is they are now the same basic company. You can shop with your Sears card at KMart.
